The Minns Labor Government has announced a multimillion-dollar upgrade for Thornton Public School, part of a $9 billion investment over four years to deliver new and upgraded schools across NSW. The exact cost of the project will not be disclosed until the building contract is awarded.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the upgrade includes a new state-of-the-art building with 16 contemporary classrooms, a library, student and staff bathrooms, additional parking, and a covered outdoor learning area (COLA).
Thornton Public School, which dates back to 1919, has been struggling to keep pace with the population boom in the local area. The Thornton and Chisholm communities have seen student numbers rise from 2,100 in 2018 to 3,000 in 2025, with an expected population increase of nearly 9,500 people in coming years.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said the project demonstrates the government's commitment to delivering vital school infrastructure for Hunter families. Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison called the upgrade a huge win, noting the rapid growth in the area and the need for schools to keep up. Thornton Public School principal Stuart Wylie said the school community is thrilled the project has been given the green light.
