As children return to school in Canberra, ACT Policing is reminding drivers to slow down in school zones across the territory. The 40km/h speed limit applies in ACT school zones between 8am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.
According to ACT Policing, in 2025 police issued 264 fines and cautioned 47 drivers found speeding in school zones. One driver was caught travelling at 89km/h in a 40km/h zone.
A 44-year-old woman from Kaleen, who was caught speeding in a school zone last year, was fined $2136 and had her driver's licence suspended for six months.
Alex Nicolson, ACT Policing Detective Superintendent of Road and Proactive Policing, said the speed limit in school zones gives motorists extra time to stop in an unexpected situation. "Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and their size and unpredictability exposes them to significant risk around roads. It is disappointing that drivers continue to gamble with children's lives by speeding in school zones," Detective Superintendent Nicolson said.
ACT Policing and the ACT government will undertake traffic enforcement operations in school zones across the territory. Drivers caught speeding may face a fine, incur demerit points, and have their licence suspended.
