A Michigan couple has been charged with murder after their 6-year-old son was found dead in a freezer, according to authorities. The parents allegedly punished the child for stealing food, leading to his death.
Details of the Incident
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced that 34-year-old Matthew Wiegand and 33-year-old Jessica Wiegand are each charged with felony murder, first-degree child abuse, and other offenses. The couple's son, identified as Giovanni Wiegand, was discovered deceased in a chest freezer at their home in Mount Clemens on June 24.
According to police, the child had been locked in the freezer as a form of discipline after he took food without permission. The exact duration of time the boy was confined is still under investigation, but authorities believe he died from hypothermia.
Legal Proceedings
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido stated, "The allegations in this case are deeply disturbing. No child should ever suffer such cruelty. We will pursue justice for Giovanni." The couple was arraigned on June 25 and ordered held without bond. Their next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.
If convicted of felony murder, the couple faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. They have not yet entered pleas.
Community Reaction
Neighbors expressed shock and horror at the news. One resident, who asked not to be identified, said, "We never imagined something like this could happen next door. They seemed like a normal family." Child protective services had no prior involvement with the family, according to officials.
The case has reignited discussions about child abuse prevention and the need for community vigilance. Local authorities are urging anyone with information about potential child abuse to report it immediately.
