Man Threatened to Kill Stranger in Canberra Venue

A 29-year-old man has been charged after allegedly threatening to kill a stranger at a venue in Canberra's city centre. The incident occurred on Friday evening at approximately 9:30 pm at a licensed premises on Bunda Street.

Police allege that the man approached a group of patrons and made verbal threats, specifically telling one person he would kill them. He also reportedly produced a knife during the confrontation.

Arrest and Charges

ACT Policing responded to reports of a disturbance and arrested the man at the scene. He was later charged with affray and possessing an offensive weapon. The accused faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.

According to police, the victim was not physically injured but was left shaken by the ordeal. The man was refused bail and is scheduled to reappear in court later this month.

Police Response

Detective Acting Superintendent John Callander said the incident highlighted the seriousness of such threats. “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Canberra’s nightlife precincts,” he said. “We encourage anyone who witnesses similar conduct to contact police immediately.”

The venue’s security staff assisted police in detaining the man until officers arrived. Police praised their quick actions in preventing further escalation.
