Bob Katter backs renter told to remove Australian flag

Bob Katter has thrown his support behind a woman who received a controversial request from her real estate agent to remove an Australian flag from her front door, even offering up his services as a helping hand.

Australian renter Breeanah O'Brien shared a video to her Instagram where she said she was told by a real estate agent to take an Australian flag down from her front door before a routine inspection. She said the agent informed her that the homeowner believed the flag could make the house a target for an attack.

Among the messages of support from commenters backing Ms O'Brien's position on the matter was Australian politician Bob Katter, who stood in solidarity with the Australian renter and even offered his services if the issue escalated.

Mr Katter in a comment to Ms O'Brien's post said that the unsettling interaction reflected what has been going on in Australia since 'before you were born'.

He then told her to stand firm in her decision to keep her Australian flag on display, before asking her to 'refer your real estate agency to my office' if the incident occurs again.

'Hi Breeanah, it’s been headed this way since before you were born, unfortunately,' Mr Katter wrote. 'Please keep the flag flying and refer your real estate agent to my office next time they tell you to take it down. Yours sincerely, Bob Katter Jr.'

Ms O'Brien replied: 'Thanks, Bob, will do.'

Ms O'Brien revealed to SkyNews.com.au that she has tried to contact the real estate agency, but is still awaiting a response.

In the video posted to social media last week, Ms O'Brien said the incident unfolded when her real estate agent arrived at the property for a routine house inspection. The woman said she was left in disbelief and began questioning when it ever became morally wrong 'to be proud to be Australian'.

'This morning we had a routine house inspection,' she said. 'And the first thing the real estate agent said when she got to the front door is "I'm going to have to take this Australian flag down before I can start the inspection." Since when has it become illegal to have an Australian flag up in Australia? Like, I would just love to know - can someone please tell me - since when has it been that you're not allowed to be proud to be Australian and live in such a beautiful country?'
