An interim report into the Bedford train crash has revealed that the driver passed a red signal before the collision that injured 12 people. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) released its preliminary findings on Wednesday, stating that the train overran a signal at danger and struck a stationary engineering vehicle near Bedford station.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred on the morning of June 15, when a passenger train operated by East Midlands Railway failed to stop at a red signal and collided with a maintenance vehicle on the tracks. Twelve people were injured, with three taken to hospital. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
The RAIB report confirmed that the train passed the signal at danger without authorization. Investigators are now focusing on why the driver did not obey the signal, including possible fatigue, distraction, or technical failure.
Investigation Findings
According to the RAIB, the signal was functioning correctly at the time of the incident. The driver has been interviewed and is cooperating with the investigation. The report noted that the train's automatic warning system (AWS) sounded an alarm when the signal was passed, but the driver did not apply the brakes in time.
“Our investigation is ongoing, but we have established that the train passed a red signal,” said a RAIB spokesperson. “We are examining all factors, including the driver's actions, the train's systems, and the track layout.”
Impact and Response
East Midlands Railway expressed regret over the incident and said it is assisting the investigation. “We are deeply sorry for what happened and are committed to understanding the cause to prevent future occurrences,” a company representative said.
The crash caused significant disruption to services on the Midland Main Line, with delays and cancellations lasting several days. Network Rail has launched a parallel review of safety procedures at the location.
Next Steps
The RAIB expects to publish its final report within 12 months, which will include recommendations to improve rail safety. In the meantime, the driver has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
