Chinese Embassy and Community Groups Demand Justice After Racist Attack in Canberra
A shocking incident of alleged racial abuse and assault against a Chinese woman in Canberra has sparked widespread outrage, with China's embassy and several community organisations calling for those responsible to be punished. The attack, which occurred last Thursday near Lake Ginninderra in Belconnen, left the victim, 27-year-old bookkeeper KK Zhang, with non-life-threatening injuries and deeply traumatised.
Details of the Violent Assault
According to police reports, the incident began when a young person, believed to be the child of the assailant, made racial comments towards Zhang and her friend. This escalated into a physical confrontation, where Zhang was repeatedly punched in the head by a woman unknown to her. The attacker allegedly snatched Zhang's phone and struck her in the face at least ten times, leaving her covered in blood and requiring hospital treatment.
In a terrifying turn of events, when Zhang attempted to prevent the woman from fleeing before police arrived, the assailant reportedly armed herself with a large knife, estimated to be 30 to 40 centimetres long, taken from a car. She pointed the weapon at Zhang while making threats, forcing Zhang's friend to intervene and pull her back to safety. Despite this, the woman and her children left the scene in a dark grey Ford Falcon sedan, allegedly smirking and making rude gestures, including giving the middle finger.
Community and Diplomatic Outrage
The Chinese Embassy in Australia has responded swiftly, contacting police to verify the situation and urging a thorough investigation. A spokesperson stated, "We noted the relevant reports and have contacted the Australian police to verify the situation, urging them to investigate the case and punish the criminals in accordance with the law." This call for justice has been echoed by prominent Chinese community groups across the country.
The Chung Wah Association, Western Australia's largest Chinese non-profit organisation, described the incident as "deeply shocking and concerning," strongly condemning all forms of violence and racism. Similarly, the Australian Chinese Network Association emphasised the need for Zhang to receive proper protection, support, and a fair outcome, highlighting that such incidents deserve wider attention to address safety and dignity concerns for overseas communities.
Impact on the Victim and Ongoing Investigation
Zhang has expressed that the ordeal has left her "terrified" and unable to resume normal activities, including returning to work, leading her to take time off over the past week. The physical evidence of the attack, including bruising on her arms and blood-stained earrings, underscores the severity of the assault.
ACT Policing has renewed its appeal for witnesses to come forward, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The case, referenced under number 8345990, remains under active investigation as authorities work to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. This incident has ignited a broader conversation about racism and multicultural respect in Australia, with community leaders reaffirming their belief in the majority of Australians' commitment to diversity and inclusion.
