Japan has been named the world's most sought-after trekking destination in new research conducted by World Expeditions, a small-group walking and cycling company. The inaugural World's Best Treks Survey revealed Japan as a clear winner, garnering 2,107 votes from participants.
Japan's Trekking Appeal
Sue Badyari, CEO of World Expeditions, commented on the result: 'Japan has quietly become one of the great trekking destinations of our time. Routes such as the Kumano Kodo, the Nakasendo Way, and the Shikoku Pilgrimage offer a rare combination of deep cultural and spiritual heritage, accessible yet rewarding walking routes, and well-developed trail networks and accommodation.'
The survey collected 13,453 destination preferences from 11,952 participants across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and North America.
Top Five Trekking Destinations
The findings of the survey reveal the top five most sought-after trekking destinations worldwide:
- Japan — 2,107 votes
- Nepal — 1,949 votes
- Patagonia — 1,858 votes
- Inca Trail (Peru) — 1,340 votes
- Bhutan — 1,237 votes
Japan's victory highlights its growing reputation as a premier trekking location, offering unique cultural and natural experiences for hikers of all levels. The Kumano Kodo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly noted for its spiritual significance and scenic beauty.
