Middle East Conflict Enters Second Month with Fragile Ceasefire Amid Escalation
The war in the Middle East has now persisted for over a month, with a precarious ceasefire currently in place. However, the situation has dramatically escalated, spreading to Europe and intensifying across the region. This follows a series of devastating air strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran, which resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian leaders.
Operation Epic Fury Sends Shockwaves Through Global Sectors
The military action, officially designated as Operation Epic Fury, has unleashed profound shockwaves across multiple critical industries worldwide. The strategic waterway, a vital global trade hub, is experiencing significant disruptions, impacting sectors from shipping and air travel to oil. Consequently, energy costs are rising sharply, and business operations are facing unprecedented challenges in this key maritime corridor.
US Vice President's Peace Mission Suspended Indefinitely
In a related development, US Vice President JD Vance's planned trip to Islamabad for potential peace talks has been officially put on hold, according to a US official. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized that President Donald Trump could reverse this decision at any moment. Special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to arrive in Washington for urgent consultations on the next steps.
The official refrained from speculating on outcomes if the current ceasefire lapses without further diplomatic engagement in Islamabad but noted that President Trump retains alternative options beyond resuming airstrikes.
Iran Expresses Frustration Over Mixed Messages from US
The suspension of Vice President Vance's travel plans coincides with statements from Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei. In a late Tuesday broadcast on state television, Baghaei revealed that Iran has not yet decided whether to participate in ceasefire negotiations. He expressed Iran's dissatisfaction with what he described as contradictory messages and unacceptable actions from the American side.
"It is not out of indecisiveness; it is because we are facing contradictory messages and behaviours, and unacceptable actions from the American counterpart," Baghaei stated, highlighting the diplomatic tensions complicating peace efforts.
