The Wollongong community is mourning the loss of two significant figures who dedicated their lives to enriching the local arts scene. At a recent council meeting, councillors formally acknowledged the passing of Bill Lever and Ben Hession, whose legacies continue to inspire.
Tributes to a Pillar of the Visual Arts
Lord Mayor Tania Brown led the tributes for Bill Lever, who passed away on November 2 at the age of 89. Mr. Lever, alongside his wife Ann, was the proprietor of Lever's Framing and Art Supplies, a business they operated since 1955.
"Bill and Ann took over the family business in the late 1960s and grew it into the region's largest art materials supplier," Cr Brown stated during the meeting. "Their commitment extended beyond commerce; they supported numerous local charities, schools, and organisations by providing framing and art materials for various projects."
Cr Brown noted that Ann Lever, now in her late 80s, continues this philanthropic work, ensuring the couple's legacy of community support endures. Council extended its heartfelt condolences to the Lever family.
Celebrating a Music Scene Champion
Councillor David Brown then honoured Ben Hession, a revered figure in Wollongong's music community, who died on January 1. Known as a passionate advocate for local music, Mr. Hession hosted the VOX Australian Music Show and was a stalwart volunteer at 2Vox Community Radio.
"Ben was somebody who gave a lot of bands their start and was a champion for local venues," Cr David Brown remarked. "Through his radio work, he provided a platform for countless artists and mentored many in technical and presenting roles."
To commemorate his immense contribution, a tribute event is scheduled for February 14 at the University of Wollongong UniBar, starting at 3pm. This all-ages gathering, with tickets available via Moshtix, aims to celebrate Mr. Hession's dedication to independent musicians.
A Legacy of Generosity
Organisers of the tribute described Mr. Hession's influence as "truly extraordinary," noting that his generosity created immeasurable opportunities for creatives to have their work heard and seen. The event will feature musicians, bands, poets, comedians, and artists donating their time to honour his memory.
Expressions of interest from performers wishing to participate can be submitted online, ensuring a diverse and heartfelt celebration of a man who shaped Wollongong's cultural identity.
