Rabbi Yossi Friedman has marked Australia's National Day of Mourning by reframing the 15 victims of the December 14 terror attack at Bondi as "heroes," highlighting that many gave their lives to save others. Rabbi Yossi, who has been at Bondi Beach nearly every day since the tragic incident, spoke to Sunrise on Thursday, describing the day as a significant moment in the recovery from this horrific event.
A Day of Remembrance and Heroism
"Today is a day of remembrance. We remember those that we've lost, the victims, or as I like to call them, the heroes. Many of them died not running away from the bullets, but covering others, running towards the bullets," Rabbi Yossi said. He acknowledged this as a moment of "reckoning" but also a day of rising, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the tragedy doesn't simply become another forgotten event.
Raw Emotions and Community Solidarity
Rabbi Yossi noted that the pain remains very raw for those affected, still calling it "surreal" that such a tragedy could occur at one of Australia's most iconic locations. Thousands have visited the site since the attack, with Rabbi Yossi sharing an inspiring story of a Christian woman who travels four hours daily to show solidarity with the Jewish and broader community.
"That's how we're going to get through this. It's by being together, standing shoulder to shoulder, side by side, holding each other up and saying that we've got each other," he said, underscoring the power of unity in healing.
National Observances and Acts of Kindness
The country paused today to honor the lives lost in the Bondi terror attack last year. Key observances included:
- Flags flown at half-mast across Australia.
- Landmarks illuminated tonight ahead of a moment of silence at 7:01 pm.
- Australians encouraged to light candles on doorsteps or next to windows as a symbol of solidarity with the Jewish community.
The government has worked in consultation with the Jewish community to provide suggestions for how Australians can participate in today's observance through acts of light and kindness, fostering a sense of collective support and remembrance.
