Mandurah's Australia Day: New Citizens & Art Project

Mandurah Celebrates Australia Day with Citizenship Ceremonies and Community Art

The City of Mandurah is preparing for a vibrant Australia Day celebration in 2026, featuring the welcoming of more than 80 new Australian citizens alongside community-focused events and artistic collaborations. This annual occasion serves as a significant moment for reflection and unity within the local area.

Citizenship Ceremony and Awards Recognise Local Contributions

A formal citizenship ceremony will be held, where individuals from diverse backgrounds will officially become Australian citizens. This event underscores Mandurah's growing and inclusive community spirit. Concurrently, the Citizen of the Year awards will honour local residents who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, contributed to community wellbeing, and inspired others through their actions.

Mayor Amber Kearns expressed pride in these initiatives, stating, "These are everyday people who make a real difference in our community." She added, "I'm also proud that we'll be welcoming more than 80 new Australians at our citizenship ceremony, each choosing to make Australia home." The awards highlight the impactful work of Mandurah's residents, reinforcing the values of service and dedication.

Community Festivities and Artistic Engagement

Following the official proceedings, a barbecue breakfast hosted by the Mandurah Lions Club will take place on the eastern foreshore's south end. Attendees can enjoy food from various trucks and live music performed by local artists, creating a festive atmosphere for all ages.

Mayor Kearns emphasised the day's significance, noting, "Australia Day is a chance for our community to come together and enjoy what makes this place so special." She further reflected, "It's a day to reflect on our shared story, appreciate the people around us, and celebrate the things we value as Australians."

Deborah Bonar Leads Inspirational Art Project

In a creative addition to the celebrations, Mandurah residents are invited to participate in a community art project led by award-winning Yamaji artist Deborah Bonar. Inspired by Mandurah's picturesque waterways, the project incorporates elements and colours from the estuary, ocean, and popular beaches.

Bonar anticipates strong community involvement, explaining, "People love working together and collaborating on art pieces like this and it's great because it gets people talking about Aboriginal art and culture." She highlighted the project's broader purpose, stating, "Community projects like this don't necessarily have to land on Australia Day, but it's about everybody coming together of mixed cultures and heritage, learning, sharing, participating and creating as a community."

Mayor Kearns endorsed the art initiative, describing it as "a simple, creative way for people of all ages to get involved and leave their mark." She extended a warm invitation to the community, saying, "I hope everyone feels welcome to come along, enjoy the activities, and share in a day that brings our community together."

Support and Collaboration

The City of Mandurah's 2026 Australia Day celebrations receive support from the Federal Government through the National Australia Day Council. This collaboration ensures a well-organised and meaningful event that fosters national pride and local engagement.

Overall, Mandurah's Australia Day plans blend traditional ceremonies with innovative artistic expressions, aiming to unite residents in celebration and reflection.
