Kaarla Wirren Fire Event Ignites Albany 2026 Bicentenary

Kaarla Wirren Fire Performance to Light Up Albany's 2026 Bicentenary

In a vibrant fusion of art and tradition, professional fire artists have joined forces with approximately 70 young participants from the Albany region to create Kaarla Wirren, a captivating performance that delves into the profound significance of fire within Noongar culture. This one-off event is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Historic Whaling Station's amphitheatre, where organisers anticipate around 1000 attendees to gather for a picnic and witness this powerful celebration of resilience.

Celebrating Indigenous Heritage and Community Spirit

Kaarla Wirren, translating to "fire spirit" in the local Indigenous language, underscores fire (kaarla) as an integral element of the traditional relationship between Indigenous peoples and their country. The project, initiated in October 2025, is led by Southern Edge Arts in collaboration with Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen and Noongar associate director Rachael Colmer. Since 1985, Southern Edge Arts has been inspiring youth through performing arts, marking a remarkable 40-year legacy of fostering creativity in the Albany area.

Year 7 students involved in the initiative have engaged in hands-on workshops that blend dance, movement, and cultural education, offering them a unique opportunity for professional mentoring and skill development. Beyond the performance itself, this six-month behind-the-scenes effort has provided practical education, leaving a lasting impact on the young participants long after the event concludes.

A Picnic Experience Under the Stars

The evening promises a memorable picnic setting, encouraging attendees to embrace the outdoors. Suggestions include visiting local spots like Stamms Emporium or Appleyards Homewares for picnic essentials, followed by a trip to the Albany Farmers Market from 8am to noon for fresh, seasonal produce such as fruits, vegetables, meats, honey, bread, and dairy. Alternatively, the Albany Picnic Provisions Trail offers a self-drive route to source locally-grown goods from various producers, including Albany Boatshed Markets, Handasydes Strawberry Farm, and Wignalls Winery.

An event spokesperson highlighted the communal aspect, stating, "Audiences will picnic under a canopy of stars as we share this special story of fire and its deep connection to spirit. Across cultures and generations, fire has been a place of gathering. In 2026, we will come together around the fire of Kaarla Wirren to reflect on the past and imagine our shared future."

Part of Albany's Bicentenary Milestone

Kaarla Wirren is a key highlight of Albany's 2026 bicentenary year, commemorating 200 years since the first permanent European settlement in Western Australia. This event not only showcases artistic talent but also reinforces the community's commitment to cultural preservation and youth engagement. Tickets for the performance are free but must be booked in advance through the official events website, ensuring accessibility for all interested in this transformative experience.
