New Fremantle Cemetery Walk Trail to Honour Influential Women of Western Australia

A new walk trail at Fremantle Cemetery is set to recognise and celebrate the women who have played pivotal roles in shaping the history of Western Australia. The Fremantle Cemetery Historical Women's Walk Trail aims to honour the lives and achievements of notable women buried at the site, with nominations now open to the public.

Community Invited to Nominate Inspirational Figures

Community members, historians, families, and organisations are encouraged to submit nominations for women they believe deserve acknowledgment on the trail. The nomination process was launched on International Women's Day, highlighting contributions across diverse fields such as the arts, community service, education, health, business, sport, advocacy, and public life.

This initiative provides an opportunity to shed light on the many Western Australian women whose legacies have often been overlooked, said Kathlene Oliver, chief executive of the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board. We are calling on the community to share their knowledge, family histories, and local stories to help create a trail that is historically robust, inclusive, and culturally respectful.

Building on a Legacy of Recognition

The project is managed by the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board and follows the successful Walking with WA Women Walk Trail at Karrakatta Cemetery. It seeks to build upon this legacy by expanding recognition to more women interred at Fremantle Cemetery.

Women Minister and Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk emphasised the importance of this trail, stating, Western Australia is home to fascinating and inspirational women who have significantly shaped our state. The Women's Walk Trail at Fremantle Cemetery offers a chance for these remarkable individuals to be acknowledged, celebrated, and remembered for generations to come.

Rigorous Assessment and Development Process

All nominations will be carefully assessed based on criteria including historical significance, demonstrated contributions to the state, and alignment with the trail's interpretive themes. To ensure accuracy and sensitivity, the MCB will consult with descendant families and cultural groups where appropriate during the biography development phase.

The trail is scheduled to be developed throughout 2026, with interpretive materials finalised after nominations are assessed and community consultation is completed. An online nomination form is available on the MCB website for easy submission.

This project not only honours the past but also inspires future generations by highlighting the diverse achievements of women in Western Australia's history.
