Canberra's Notable Figures to Host Inaugural Celebrity Read Aloud Event
Canberra residents are invited to a unique literary celebration this Saturday, as local celebrities gather to read their favourite children's books aloud. The inaugural Canberra Great Celebrity Read Off will take place at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, starting at 11am.
This free, hour-long event is being held to mark World Read Aloud Day, highlighting the significant role that reading aloud plays in fostering learning and building connections within the community. Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favourite book character to add to the festive atmosphere in the Senate courtyard.
Diverse Line-Up of Local Personalities
The event features an impressive array of Canberra identities, each bringing their own unique flair to the readings. ACT independent senator David Pocock has selected Busy Beaks by Sarah Allen, a vibrant picture book that showcases Australia's diverse birdlife.
Penny farthing rider Simon Weir will entertain the crowd with Banjo Paterson's classic poem Mulga Bill's Bicycle, a humorous tale about the misadventures of riding a penny farthing that was first published in 1896 and later illustrated by Kilmeny and Deborah Niland.
Science, Sport, and Storytelling Combine
Scientist and balloon artist Dr Chloe Lim will read Nick Bland's much-loved rhyming adventure The Very Cranky Bear, bringing her creative talents to the storytelling session.
Marathon legend and Indigenous Marathon Foundation founder Robert de Castella has chosen Dingoes Are Not Dogs, a book written by Chris Sarra and illustrated by students from Cherbourg State Primary School.
Gold-medal-winning Paralympian Vanessa Low will share Alison Lester's delightful story The Very Noisy Baby, while clown doctor Ruth Pieloor, known as Dr Whoops, will present another Alison Lester classic, The Magic Beach.
Comedy and Canine Adventures
Rounding out the line-up is comedian and Play School writer Carlo Ritchie, who will read Anne Gibson's Forders the Dog, a picture book that follows the carefree day of an energetic canine.
This community-focused event underscores Canberra's commitment to promoting literacy and the joy of reading. While admission is free, organisers recommend booking tickets in advance to secure a spot at this special celebration of storytelling and local talent.
