A British couple were discovered semi-conscious and suffering from severe burns after becoming trapped by wildfires in the Almería region of southern Spain, local authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Critical Condition After Rescue
The couple, whose names have not been released, were airlifted to a hospital in Murcia after firefighters located them near the town of Vélez-Blanco. Both are in critical condition, with burns covering more than 60% of their bodies, according to the Andalusian health service.
Emergency services received a distress call Saturday evening, but intense flames and thick smoke delayed rescue efforts until Sunday morning. The couple had been hiking in a remote area when the fire, fueled by strong winds and high temperatures, suddenly surrounded them.
Wildfires Rage Across Southern Spain
The blaze, which started on Friday, has already destroyed over 8,000 hectares of forest and farmland. More than 500 firefighters, supported by water-dropping aircraft, are battling the flames. Regional authorities have evacuated 12 villages, affecting approximately 3,000 residents.
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed solidarity with the victims and praised the work of emergency services. "Our thoughts are with the British couple and all those affected by these devastating fires," he said in a statement.
Climate Change Blamed for Increasing Frequency
Scientists have linked the intensity of this year's wildfire season to climate change, with record temperatures and prolonged drought creating tinderbox conditions. Spain has seen a 40% increase in wildfires compared to the five-year average, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.
Local officials warned that the fire could continue to spread if weather conditions do not improve. "We are facing an extreme situation," said Almería's regional president. "The safety of our citizens and visitors remains our top priority."
