Australia's Social Media Crackdown: Reddit and Kick Next in Line for Under-16 Ban
Australia targets Reddit, Kick in under-16 social media ban

The Australian government is casting a wider net in its controversial plan to ban children under 16 from social media platforms, with Reddit and gaming-focused platform Kick now joining the list of targeted services.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has confirmed these popular platforms would be swept up in the proposed crackdown, telling parliament the government is determined to implement "effective age assurance" measures to keep young Australians safe online.

Expanding the Digital Safety Net

The revelation came during question time when Ms Rowland was pressed on whether the ban would extend beyond major platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. "The government is currently consulting on the draft bill, which does apply to a range of services including Reddit and Kick," the minister stated.

This expansion signals the government's intention to create comprehensive digital protection for minors, rather than targeting only the most prominent social media giants.

Technology First Approach

Rather than immediately implementing an outright ban, the government is prioritising technological solutions. Ms Rowland emphasised that age assurance technology represents "the least restrictive means" of achieving their child protection goals while balancing other important considerations.

The government's stance suggests they prefer a measured approach that leverages emerging verification technologies rather than blanket restrictions that might be easily circumvented.

Industry and Public Consultation Underway

The proposed legislation is currently undergoing consultation with both industry stakeholders and the broader public. This process will help shape the final form of the bill and address potential implementation challenges.

As digital platforms continue to evolve and new services gain popularity, the government faces the ongoing challenge of keeping its protective measures relevant and effective in a rapidly changing online landscape.
