A dramatic marine rescue unfolded off the Perth coast on Monday evening, as four men were pulled to safety after their boat capsized near Hillarys Boat Harbour.
Evening Return Turns to Emergency
The group, described as work friends, were returning from a day trip to Rottnest Island when disaster struck. At approximately 6:00 pm on Monday, 22 December 2025, a large wave hit their vessel, causing it to capsize in the waters just off Hillarys.
In a critical move that likely aided their rescue, one of the men managed to call triple zero (000) before they were all forced to abandon the stricken boat. The four friends then found themselves in the water, awaiting help.
Ferry Skipper to the Rescue
The men spent an anxious 45 minutes in the water before their rescue arrived from an unexpected quarter. A skipper operating a Rottnest Island ferry successfully located and retrieved all four individuals from the ocean.
Once safely back on land at Hillarys, the group was assessed by paramedics from St John Ambulance. Fortunately, despite their harrowing experience, all four men were understood to be in good condition and did not require further hospital treatment.
A Timely Reminder on Water Safety
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of Western Australia's coastal waters, even on journeys between popular destinations like the mainland and Rottnest Island. The quick thinking of the individual who made the emergency call and the swift response of the ferry skipper were pivotal in ensuring a positive outcome.
Authorities often emphasise the importance of safety equipment, including life jackets and reliable communication devices, for all boaters. This successful rescue highlights how preparedness and timely professional intervention can prevent tragedy.
