Family Speaks After Wollongong Surfer's Shark Attack Survival

Family Expresses Gratitude Following Wollongong Surfer's Shark Attack Ordeal

The family of a Wollongong surfer has publicly praised medical professionals and bystanders after their loved one survived a terrifying shark attack at a popular Sydney beach. Andre de Ruyter, a 27-year-old musician and graphic artist from the Illawarra region, is now in stable condition following emergency surgery for severe leg injuries sustained during the incident.

Dramatic Rescue at Manly's North Steyne Beach

Emergency services were called to Manly's North Steyne Beach around 6:20pm on Monday evening after reports of a shark attack. Bystanders and fellow surfers quickly pulled de Ruyter to shore, where he received immediate medical attention before being transported to Royal North Shore Hospital. The Austinmer Surf Club member required thirteen units of blood during his initial treatment and underwent emergency surgery for his injuries.

On Wednesday, his family released a statement expressing both relief and gratitude. "Andre de Ruyter, our compassionate, talented musician, graphic artist and lover of surfing has been placed in a stable condition with wonderful attentive medical staff," they said. The family specifically thanked the brave first responders who rushed to save their son's life during the traumatic event.

Request for Privacy During Recovery

The family has asked for positive energy and respectful privacy as de Ruyter continues his recovery journey. "We ask for positive energy around his recovery and will give more information when he is ready," they stated. "We ask for mindful care and respect of our son's privacy till the path forward is clearer. Thank you so much. Kindly, Lisa, Olaf and Alysha, his direct family."

Series of Shark Encounters Along NSW Coast

This incident occurred during a concerning 48-hour period that saw four separate shark encounters along the New South Wales coastline:

  • On Sunday, 12-year-old Nico Antic was mauled by a bull shark at Vaucluse in Sydney and remains in hospital fighting for his life
  • On Monday, an 11-year-old boy was knocked into the water by a shark at Dee Why Beach, with the predator tearing a chunk from his surfboard
  • On Tuesday, a 39-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark at Point Plomer near Crescent Head on the Mid-North Coast

Community Support for Injured Surfer

Heathcote MP Maryanne Stuart has reached out to de Ruyter's family to offer support from the local community. "I spoke to his Mum this morning [Wednesday] and sent all our love to Andre and the family," she said. "Our thoughts are with Andre de Ruyter and his family. Andre was attacked by a shark recently and is in hospital."

Stuart described de Ruyter as "a beautiful gifted young artist from the Heathcote electorate" who needs "peace and positivity" during his recovery. "Andre is strong, he's compassionate and an awesome young man. He needs time and space to heal," she added.

The incident has highlighted both the dangers of ocean activities and the importance of emergency response systems along Australia's coastline. As de Ruyter continues his recovery, his family's message emphasizes gratitude for the medical care he received and the community support surrounding his difficult journey back to health.
