A man has died after being pulled from an unpatrolled tidal swimming pool in Sydney's affluent eastern suburbs, sparking a police investigation and renewed safety concerns.
Emergency Response at Double Bay Pool
Emergency services were called to the Murray Rose Pool, also known as Redleaf Pool, on New South Head Rd at Double Bay at approximately 2.30pm on Thursday. The call came after serious concerns were raised for the welfare of a man in the water. According to reports, bystanders had already pulled the man from the water before police and NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived on the scene.
Efforts to Revive the Man Fail
Despite the swift actions of members of the public and the intensive efforts of paramedics to perform CPR and other life-saving measures, the man could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident has cast a pall over the popular harbourside swimming spot, which is frequented by families and locals, especially during the warmer months.
No Lifesaving Services at the Location
A key fact confirmed in the aftermath is that no lifesaving services are provided at the Murray Rose Pool. This information was provided by the Woollahra Municipal Council, which manages the facility. The pool's unpatrolled status is a critical detail in the unfolding investigation into the circumstances of the man's death.
In response to the tragedy, police have established a crime scene as detectives from the local area command work to piece together the exact sequence of events. Their investigation will aim to determine how the incident unfolded. As is standard procedure in such cases, a report will be prepared for the coroner, who will ultimately examine the cause of death.
The death serves as a sombre reminder of the inherent risks associated with swimming in unpatrolled waterways, even in seemingly calm tidal pools within Sydney Harbour. Community members have been left shaken by the event, which occurred on a weekday afternoon at a well-known local landmark.
