Seven Network Celebrates Dual Triumph at Australian Sport Commission Media Awards
The Seven Network has achieved a remarkable double victory at the prestigious Australian Sport Commission Media Awards, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The network's exceptional coverage of the 2025 Bathurst 1000 and the legendary broadcaster Bruce McAvaney were both honored with top accolades, highlighting Seven's dominance in sports broadcasting.
Historic Bathurst 1000 Coverage Recognized
Seven's broadcast of the 2025 Repco Bathurst 1000 has been hailed as one of the greatest Supercars Championship races ever captured on television. The coverage meticulously documented every thrilling, emotional, and unpredictable moment of Matt Payne and Garth Tander's monumental victory on Mount Panorama.
The broadcast achieved significant milestones, attracting the largest audience for the Bathurst 1000 since 2016 and setting a new record for Supercars viewership on the 7plus Sport platform. In total, more than 5.9 million Australians tuned in live and free on Seven and 7plus Sport to witness the historic event.
Bruce McAvaney Honored for Individual Excellence
In a second triumph at the 2026 ASC Media Awards, the Seven Network celebrated the recognition of Australia's most revered sports commentator, Bruce McAvaney. McAvaney accepted the award for Best Sport Coverage By An Individual – Broadcast, a testament to his decades of exceptional work in the industry.
"It's an enormous honor. You're the front person for a team in roles like this and that's what makes it so enjoyable, you're part of an exceptional team," McAvaney said in his heartfelt acceptance speech.
He also reflected on the broader significance of sports broadcasting, noting, "The Commonwealth Games is very much on my mind at the moment and we were reminded tonight that it is the only multi-sport event in the world with that integration of para-athletes and able-bodied athletes and that is what so much of tonight has been about."
McAvaney expressed deep gratitude, adding, "It's wonderful winning these awards but the greatest gift is opportunity and just getting the chance. I'm the luckiest bloke in the world."
Looking Ahead: Seven's Sports Broadcasting Schedule
The awards come as Seven continues to expand its sports coverage. The network's Supercars programming for 2026 kicked off last weekend with the Repco Sydney 500 and will continue with the NTI Townsville 500 in July.
Meanwhile, Bruce McAvaney will remain a prominent figure on Seven's broadcasts throughout the year. His schedule includes extensive coverage of horse racing and athletics, as well as the highly anticipated 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, set to commence on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
These accolades underscore the Seven Network's commitment to delivering high-quality sports content to Australian audiences, solidifying its position as a leader in the broadcasting industry.
