Newcastle Jets Defender Mark Natta Linked with European Move
Could a key player from the Newcastle Jets be set for a high-profile transfer to Europe at the conclusion of the current A-League Men's season? Reports have emerged suggesting that defender Mark Natta is attracting significant interest from Norwegian club FK Bodo/Glimt, a team currently competing in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
Contract Situation and European Interest
Natta, who is on the verge of making his 100th appearance in the ALM, comes off contract with the Jets at the end of the 2025-2026 campaign. This timing has sparked speculation about his future, with Bodo/Glimt reportedly sending their technical team to Australia to assess the 23-year-old centre-back. The Norwegian side, a four-time domestic champion in recent years, has impressed in Europe this season, notably defeating powerhouses like Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to advance in the Champions League.
While no official confirmation has been made regarding the link, podcast host James Dodd from the Total ALeagues show revealed details on a recent episode. "It's not going to happen now, but there's a good chance it happens at the end of the season," Dodd stated. "Their technical team were here looking at Mark Natta. They've been in Australia and they really like him." He added that the club believes Natta could technically integrate into their squad immediately, though they acknowledged he might not be ready to mark elite strikers like Erling Haaland just yet.
Natta's Impact and Potential Loss for the Jets
Natta began his ALM career with the Western Sydney Wanderers before joining the Jets in the 2022-2023 season. An Olyroos representative, he has been a consistent starter for Newcastle, featuring in all but seven of his 76 games and helping the club secure last year's Australia Cup title. This season, he has been instrumental in the Jets' success, forming a solid centre-back partnership and contributing to eight wins from ten outings as the team sits atop the men's table.
Former Socceroos player Tommy Oar highlighted Natta's importance, saying on the same podcast, "I think he would be a big loss for the Jets because he's so important to how they play." He praised Natta's ability to play precise passes from defence, a skill that sets him apart from many other centre-backs in the league. "Would be a fantastic move for him, but would be a shame from a Jets perspective," Oar added.
Expert Analysis on Natta's Suitability
Retired striker and ALM commentator Daniel McBreen also weighed in on the potential transfer. When asked if he was surprised by the European interest, McBreen replied, "On this year's performances, no." He acknowledged Natta's technical prowess, particularly in playing out from the back, which aligns with modern football trends. However, McBreen noted areas for improvement, such as defensive positioning and marking during crosses.
"He loses contact of where his player is and he concentrates on the ball and players can run off him," McBreen explained. "Now he's probably done a lot of work on that in the last six-to-12 months, but that's probably the biggest downfall in his game." Despite this, he emphasised Natta's strengths in a team that controls possession, stating, "As far as a ball-playing centre-back, when they control games, he's been exceptional this year. I've been his biggest advocate this year, because I think he's been outstanding."
Jets' Upcoming Fixtures and Broader Context
The Jets are currently riding a wave of form, having set a club record with five consecutive wins. Their upcoming schedule includes away trips to Adelaide and Perth, followed by home matches against Macarthur and a derby with the Central Coast Mariners. Natta's potential departure would be a significant blow, but it also underscores the growing recognition of A-League talent on the international stage.
In addition to Bodo/Glimt, Dodd mentioned that several other A-League clubs are interested in Natta, highlighting his value in the domestic market. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether this promising defender makes a leap to European football, marking another milestone for Australian players abroad.
