Man Charged After Police Shooting in Sydney Car Ramming

A 32-year-old man is facing multiple charges following an incident in which a police officer was allegedly hit by a car and pinned between two vehicles, leading to the officer discharging his firearm.

Incident Details

The 39-year-old police sergeant has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for serious lower leg injuries sustained in Sydney’s southwest on Wednesday evening. The officer, who was on patrol with the Public Order and Riot Squad, approached an allegedly stolen Toyota C-HR at the intersection of Juno Parade and Punchbowl Road in Greenacre at approximately 8:40 pm.

According to NSW Police, “When an officer approached the vehicle to arrest the driver, the vehicle allegedly accelerated, pinning the sergeant between two vehicles.” In response, the officer fired his firearm, striking the Toyota before the vehicle allegedly drove away from the scene.

Suspect Apprehended

Approximately 35 minutes later, police were called to Thorn Street in Ryde, about 10 kilometres away, after reports of an injured man walking along the street. A man with a gunshot wound was subsequently found in the yard of a home on nearby Squires Street. The stolen Toyota was located abandoned on Richard Johnson Crescent.

The 32-year-old suspect, who sustained gunshot wounds to his shoulder and wrist, was treated by paramedics and remains in a stable condition under police guard in hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Charges Laid

On Thursday, the man was charged with eight offences, including using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assaulting a police officer, hindering or resisting arrest, and stealing a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Friday.
