Richmond Tigers great Trent Cotchin has thrown his support behind Andrew McQualter as the next premiership coach of the West Coast Eagles, praising the former Tigers assistant for his tactical nous and leadership qualities. McQualter, who served as an assistant under Damien Hardwick at Richmond, is among the frontrunners for the vacant Eagles coaching position after Adam Simpson's departure.
Cotchin's Endorsement
Cotchin, a three-time premiership captain at Richmond, spoke highly of McQualter's ability to connect with players and implement a winning game plan. In an interview, Cotchin stated, 'Andrew has an incredible football mind and a deep understanding of what it takes to build a successful team culture. He played a key role in our premiership success at Richmond, and I have no doubt he can replicate that at West Coast.'
McQualter's Coaching Pedigree
McQualter, 38, has been an assistant coach at Richmond since 2017, contributing to three premierships (2017, 2019, 2020). He also had a successful playing career with the Tigers and St Kilda. Known for his work with the midfield and forward lines, McQualter is highly regarded for his strategic thinking and player development.
The Eagles are in a rebuilding phase after a disappointing 2024 season, finishing 17th on the ladder. The club is seeking a coach who can guide a young list back to contention. McQualter's experience in a successful environment makes him a strong candidate.
Other Candidates
West Coast has also been linked to other potential coaches, including Collingwood assistant Brendon Lade and former St Kilda coach Brett Ratten. However, Cotchin's public backing of McQualter adds weight to his candidacy. Cotchin emphasized, 'The Eagles need someone who can bring fresh ideas and instil belief in the group. Andrew is that person.'
The West Coast coaching panel, led by CEO Don Pyke, is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. McQualter is currently an assistant coach at Melbourne, having moved from Richmond after the 2023 season.
Cotchin's Legacy
Trent Cotchin retired from AFL at the end of 2023 after a stellar 281-game career. His endorsement carries significant weight in the football community. He remains involved in the game as a media commentator and mentor.
West Coast fans will be hoping that McQualter can bring the same success to the blue and gold as he did at Richmond. The club's last premiership came in 2018 under Adam Simpson.
