NPL Coach to Challenge Suspension After Sideline Incident
Belmont Swansea coach Mick Stafford has launched an appeal against what he deems a "ridiculous" three-match ban, stemming from his involvement in a sideline confrontation during the opening round of the Northern NSW National Premier Leagues (NPL). The incident occurred in Belswans' contentious 2-1 victory over Valentine at Croudace Bay Complex on Sunday, where Stafford received a red card early in the second half.
Coach Defends Actions in Player Safety Dispute
Stafford maintains that he rushed to aid one of his players after a melee erupted near the Valentine dugout, with the match review panel finding him guilty of leaving the technical area in a provocative or inflammatory manner. The scuffle involved Belswans' midfielder Andy McGee and Valentine's Zach McShane, following an illegal tackle from behind. Stafford asserts he became involved to protect his player, who was on the ground with multiple opposition players standing over him.
"I went to the aid of my player who was on the ground with five Valentine players standing over him; at that moment his safety was threatened," Stafford told the Newcastle Herald. He emphasized that his primary concern was player safety, stating, "I was trying to protect my player's safety. That is first and foremost in football. Yes I ran out fast. I didn't push anyone. I just stood over my player. To get three games is ridiculous. We will fight the charge."
Appeal Process and Immediate Consequences
The appeal will be heard by an independent disciplinary panel, likely next week. In the interim, Stafford will serve one match of the ban when Belswans host Cooks Hill on Sunday at 5pm. He is prohibited from entering the dressing sheds or coaching from 30 minutes before kickoff until 30 minutes after full-time, with assistant coach Josh Rufo taking over team management.
In related news, Adamstown keeper George Scorer will miss the clash with Kahibah at Adamstown Oval on Friday at 8pm due to a mandatory one-match ban. Scorer was sent off in a 2-0 loss to Azzurri after racing out of his box and bringing down Matt Cahill.
Upcoming NPL Round Two Fixtures
Other round two matches include premiers Magic aiming to rebound from their opening loss against Valentine at Magic Park on Friday night at 8pm. On Saturday, Jaffas host Edgeworth at 5pm, while Maitland tackle Weston at 7pm at Cook Square Park. Charlestown Azzurri will face Newcastle Olympic at 5pm on Sunday.
