Western Force's Zac Lomax Embraces Rugby Union Transition as Dylan Pietsch's Comeback Looms

In a significant development for the Western Force, utility back Max Burey has revealed that former rugby league star Zac Lomax is immersing himself in learning the intricacies of rugby union, with a potential debut on the horizon. This comes as the team anticipates the return of Wallabies winger Dylan Pietsch from a foot injury, adding depth to their outside backs ahead of a crucial match against the Queensland Reds this Saturday.

Lomax's Rapid Adaptation to Union Play

Zac Lomax, who previously played for the Parramatta Eels and St. George Illawarra in rugby league, has been actively working on his skills since joining the Western Force. Growing up in Temora, New South Wales, Lomax has a history with Burey, hailing from nearby Wagga Wagga, where they competed against each other in junior leagues. Burey praised Lomax's dedication, noting his focus on mastering the breakdown with teammate Carlo Tizzano, a challenging aspect of the game.

"Since he's come in, he's been really good at diving into it," Burey commented. "He spent a lot of work with Carlo Tizzano working on the breakdown, which certainly is not fun. He's certainly ripped into that part around the training field and he's just being himself as well." Lomax also observed the coaching staff during a recent loss to the Chiefs, gaining insights from coach Simon Cron and his team.

Pietsch's Impending Return Boosts Team Morale

As Lomax continues his cross-code education, the Western Force are set to welcome back Dylan Pietsch, who has been sidelined with a persistent foot injury. Pietsch's return is expected to enhance the team's performance, particularly with his speed and power on the edge. Burey highlighted the positive impact of Pietsch's energy and the increased competition in training sessions.

"We've got Pietschy coming back as well, so there's two guys in the outside backs which certainly adds a lot of depth and competition and makes us better," Burey said. "(Tuesday) was probably one of the best training sessions we've had, both sides and it's because of that depth. Pietschy has got a lot of energy around the group and he brings a real x-factor with his speed and power on the edge."

Team Confidence Amidst Challenging Season

Despite a difficult start to the season with five losses in six games, the Western Force remain optimistic. Burey emphasized that the team is not panicking, even if they face another setback against the Reds. He expressed confidence in their ability to turn the season around, with eight games remaining and a focus on winning each match.

"I don't think we need to win this weekend to keep hope alive, but obviously that's our focus, and that's what we're looking to do," Burey stated. "There's eight games to go. Our focus is we want to win every game. We still think we're a chance, and still believe in each other and the group and the system we've got here and we were pretty close on the weekend."

The upcoming clash at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane will be a test for Lomax if he debuts, with Reds hooker Matt Faessler noting the hostile environment. However, with Pietsch's return and Lomax's progress, the Western Force are poised to strengthen their lineup and aim for a turnaround in their Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
