Seventeen Years of Stadium Studies Accumulate $1.6 Million Price Tag
The ACT government has spent a staggering $1.6 million on seven separate stadium reports over the past 17 years, with the final bill still climbing. This substantial investment has been made while Canberra remains no closer to determining a definitive location for a new sporting arena.
Detailed Breakdown of Report Expenditure
Independent MLA Thomas Emerson recently compelled the government to disclose most of the costs through parliamentary questioning. The figures reveal a progressive escalation in spending on these feasibility studies.
The initial stadium investigation in 2009 cost taxpayers $176,149. Subsequent reports followed in 2017 ($22,000), 2020 ($199,400), and 2023 ($281,986). The most recent and expensive analysis, intended to finalise the stadium location potentially at the CIT Bruce site, came with a hefty $929,184 price tag.
This cumulative total of $1,608,719 excludes two earlier City to the Lake reports from 2013 and 2015, which also included stadium considerations. ACT Sports Minister Yvette Berry previously indicated the latest report would be finalised "within weeks" back in June 2025, yet the results remain unreleased to the public.
Brumbies Players Orchestrate Memorable Marriage Proposal
In a heartwarming display of community engagement, ACT Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa and teammates Billy Pollard and Rhys van Nek recently helped orchestrate a surprise marriage proposal at Canberra Stadium. Andrew Rowland enlisted the players' assistance during the Brumbies' fan day, creating an unforgettable moment for his partner Taylah.
Front Row Scrum Formation Sets the Scene
The players devised an ingenious plan involving a mock scrum formation. As Taylah prepared to feed the ball, she discovered Rowland waiting on one knee with an engagement ring instead of a rugby ball. The proposal quickly became the talk of the fan day, with players reportedly more nervous than the prospective groom.
"It was incredible, the fact they were willing to do this with no hesitation," Rowland reflected. "It was just perfect place, perfect time, perfect people." Both Rowland and Taylah share a rugby background through Canberra's Uni-Norths club, making the Brumbies' involvement particularly meaningful.
Brumbies Legend Matt Giteau Returns in Mentoring Role
In other Brumbies news, 103-Test veteran Matt Giteau has returned to club headquarters in a mentoring capacity. While not preparing for a playing comeback, the 2004 Super Rugby champion is working with the ACT's playmakers and kickers, including flyhalf contenders Tane Edmed and Declan Meredith.
Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham welcomed Giteau's contemporary insights, noting "there's a lot of experiences that he has gone through that are more relevant to this day and age." Giteau has also joined the Canberra Raiders' pathways program, reuniting with his brother Justin who serves as an assistant coach.
Canberra Junior Claims Prestigious Tennis Title
Fourteen-year-old Tommy Camus has emerged as a tennis prodigy to watch after winning the Asia Pacific elite 14 and under boys' singles title at Melbourne Park. The Canberra junior overcame a group stage loss to defeat top-seeded South Korean Siyun Kim in straight sets.
Camus, younger brother of former Canberra prodigy Charlie Camus, rebounded from an injury-plagued year that included four months sidelined with a broken foot. Tennis ACT chief executive Mark La Brooy described the achievement as "incredible" and "inspiring for young players across the ACT."
Local Cricket Final Promises Explosive Batting Display
Ginninderra will face Queanbeyan in the Cricket ACT Twenty20 grand final at Manuka Oval this Sunday, featuring one of Canberra's most feared ball strikers. Brad Thomas has smashed 11 sixes from his last 43 deliveries, remaining unbeaten in his previous two innings while accumulating 104 runs.
Queanbeyan will counter with semi-final hero Kai Brunker, who claimed 5-19 against Western District last weekend. Ginninderra veteran Scott Murn emphasised his team's focus on making impactful contributions "whether it's with the ball, with the bat or in the field."
