Brumbies Prop Blake Schoupp Overcomes Achilles Injury for 2026 Comeback
Brumbies star Schoupp set for 2026 comeback after injury

ACT Brumbies forward Blake Schoupp is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Super Rugby Pacific field in 2026, having conquered both a serious physical injury and the psychological challenges that followed.

From Setback to Comeback Trail

The promising prop's 2025 campaign was cut brutally short in April 2025 when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a scrum in a match against the Queensland Reds. This followed previous shoulder issues, marking a difficult period for the player once famously labelled a "brick s---house" by former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones.

However, after a dedicated rehabilitation and pre-season, Brumbies assistant coach John Ulugia reports Schoupp is in career-best condition. "Blake has had a big off-season. He's probably in the best nick ever in the time he's been here," Ulugia stated.

Ulugia, himself a respected scrum technician now working with the Wallabies, foresees a standout year. "He's a big, powerful, strong player and gives us a lot around the set-piece, but I think we're going to see a little bit more with ball-carrying and his tackles this year," he added.

Winning the Mental Battle

The journey back involved more than just physical healing. Ulugia highlighted the importance of Schoupp's life away from rugby—working as a school teacher and coach—in maintaining a healthy mindset.

"It gives him space away from rugby a bit, and helps keep those negative thoughts out of his mind," Ulugia explained, emphasising the mental toll of long-term injuries. He believes this holistic approach, combined with Schoupp's attention to technical detail based on coach feedback, has set the stage for a breakthrough.

"There's always space for front-rowers to become world-class and I think Schouppy's got that in him," Ulugia declared confidently.

Mentorship and Key Trial Dates

Schoupp's development is further bolstered by the presence and guidance of Wallabies veteran James Slipper, who has re-signed with the Brumbies for 2026. Slipper, on the cusp of becoming Super Rugby's most-capped player ever, provides an ideal mentor for the younger prop.

"They've been together for I think three years... they've got a friendship that is very strong. Even though they're playing the same position, one's going to help the other get better," Ulugia said of the pair's productive relationship.

Fans will get their first look at Schoupp's return in pre-season trials. The Brumbies face the Western Force in Perth on January 30, followed by a clash against the NSW Waratahs at Marist College on February 5. These matches will be the first test of his recovery since the Achilles rupture.

With a clean bill of health, a refined skillset, and elite mentorship, the stage is set for Blake Schoupp to fulfil his potential and become a cornerstone of both the Brumbies' and Wallabies' forward packs in the 2026 season.
