ACT Brumbies Secure Homegrown Talent Rory Scott on New Two-Year Deal
The ACT Brumbies have made a significant move to reinforce their forward pack, signing flanker Rory Scott to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Canberra until the conclusion of the 2028 Super Rugby season. This announcement comes as the club prepares for the departure of key back-row players, including Luke Reimer's anticipated move to the NSW Waratahs and Tom Hooper's transfer to England.
Scott's Commitment to Canberra and Competitive Environment
Rory Scott, a 25-year-old local product, has chosen to remain with the Brumbies despite interest from rival clubs, emphasising his dedication to the team's culture and development pathway. In discussing the squad's dynamics, Scott acknowledged the disappointment of teammates leaving but expressed confidence in the emerging talent within the group.
"Obviously there's always movement and it's disappointing that boys leave, but they've decided that's the better opportunity for them," Scott remarked. "Regardless, there's a really strong group here. The young boys coming through are doing really well, and it makes everyone better when it's just a strong, competitive environment. You have to be at your best to play, which keeps pushing you to improve."
Defensive Prowess and Role in Star-Studded Back-Row
Scott, who earned a taste of Wallabies camp last year, is often viewed as an unsung hero in a back-row that boasts considerable talent. Alongside two-time John Eales Medallist Rob Valetini and try-scoring threat Charlie Cale, Scott brings a defensive speciality that complements the unit's overall strength.
His performance in the 2025 season underscored this role, with 197 tackles in 15 games placing him among Super Rugby's top 10 for tackles made. "I play more footy on the defensive side of the ball, so that's my point of difference," Scott explained. "I offer a good work rate on both sides, but making an impact defensively is key for a seven."
Coach's Praise and Strategic Importance
Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham lauded Scott's development and local connection, highlighting his value to the squad. "Rory has shown tremendous growth since coming through our pathway. His dedication, work ethic, and connection to Canberra make him an invaluable member," Larkham stated.
The signing is timely, as Larkham seeks to fill the void left by Hooper, who ranked sixth in Super Rugby for turnovers won last year. Scott's defensive capabilities position him as a prime candidate to step into this role, bolstering the Brumbies' breakdown efforts.
External Recognition and Team Updates
Scott's impact was noted by Waratahs coach Dan McKellar, who handed him his Super Rugby debut, following a recent trial match. McKellar observed that NSW were "exposed in and around the breakdown," acknowledging the Brumbies' strength in this area.
Meanwhile, the Brumbies are monitoring the situation of star centre Len Ikitau, who is recovering from shoulder surgery while playing for Exeter in England. Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter indicated the injury was more severe than initially thought, with Ikitau expected to be sidelined until at least late March.
This contract extension not only secures a key player for the Brumbies but also reinforces their commitment to nurturing homegrown talent as they aim for success in the upcoming Super Rugby campaigns.
