Western Force Bolsters Squad with Argentine Trio for 2026 Super Rugby Season
Argentine Trio Joins Western Force for 2026 Super Rugby

The Western Force is set to inject a distinct South American flavour into their lineup for the upcoming 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, following the acquisition of three talented Argentine players. This strategic move aims to strengthen the club's competitive edge and add international depth to their squad.

Argentine Powerhouse Joins Force Roster

This week, the Perth-based club officially announced the signing of formidable hooker Leonel Oviedo on an injury replacement contract. Oviedo brings impressive physicality to the team, standing at 188cm tall and weighing 118kg. He joins fellow countrymen lock Franco Molina and half-back Agustin Moyano, both of whom were recruited during the off-season, creating a notable Argentine contingent within the Force.

Los Pumas' Rising Global Influence

The Argentine national team, Los Pumas, has been making significant strides on the world rugby stage in recent years. Their achievements include a historic victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand during 2022, followed by triumphs against the traditionally dominant New Zealand side at the Rugby Championship in both 2024 and 2025. Molina played prominent roles in these notable victories, bringing valuable big-match experience to the Western Force.

Cultural Connection Eases Transition

Molina expressed enthusiasm about having compatriots alongside him in Perth, noting that their shared background will significantly ease the transition. "Having fellow Argentinians here will make a lot of difference," Molina stated. "We plan to enjoy the local beaches and perhaps organise some barbecues together. I'm genuinely happy to have them with me."

He elaborated on the challenges of being the sole Argentine player in previous teams, highlighting language barriers as a particular difficulty. "In situations where I was the only Argentinian, communication could be challenging because of the language difference – English versus Spanish. Having three of us together simplifies things immensely. We can communicate effectively, and if someone doesn't understand something, we can explain it to each other."

Molina also noted similarities between Perth's climate and that of Argentina, with the exception of the beach environment being more prominent in Western Australia.

Competition for Second Row Position

Among the South American additions, Molina brings the most impressive credentials to the Western Force. He is expected to compete vigorously with established players Jeremy Williams and Darcy Swain for a starting position in the second row, adding healthy competition to the squad's forward pack.

Coach's Vision Proves Influential

Molina revealed that head coach Simon Cron played a pivotal role in his decision to join the Western Force. "The club's proposal was genuinely attractive," Molina explained. "When Simon called me personally, I became genuinely interested in the project he envisioned for the team."

He expressed excitement about the opportunity to compete in Super Rugby Pacific, describing it as "the best tournament in the world" and emphasising his eagerness to learn from the intense rugby environment. "It's really good to come here and play this high-intensity rugby. I'm determined to learn as much as possible during my time with the Force."

Molina added that he's pleased to resume playing after a two-month break, having spent three weeks in Perth preparing for the upcoming season. "We've been through some planning phases, and now we're moving into game preparations. It's fantastic to be back playing rugby."

Oviedo's Early Impressions

Speaking through Molina as an interpreter during his first week in Perth, Leonel Oviedo shared his initial impressions of the club. "It's a really exciting club, and I'm genuinely happy to be here," Oviedo conveyed via translation, expressing enthusiasm about his new rugby home.

Season Opener Approaches

The Western Force will commence their 2026 Super Rugby Pacific campaign on February 14th with a home match against the ACT Brumbies at HBF Park in Perth. The Argentine trio will be looking to make immediate impacts as the Force aims to return to the Super Rugby finals under Coach Simon Cron's leadership in his third season at the helm.
