Matt Graham Reflects on Dale Begg-Smith's Lasting Olympic Legacy

Australian freestyle skier Matt Graham has emphasized the profound and ongoing impact of Dale Begg-Smith on the nation's Olympic team, two decades after Begg-Smith secured Australia's first moguls gold medal. Graham, who recently earned a bronze in the dual moguls at the Milan-Cortina Games, attributes his career choice to Begg-Smith's historic victory in 2006.

Inspiration and Mentorship from a Moguls Pioneer

Graham, now 31, described Begg-Smith's Olympic triumph as a pivotal moment that shaped his path in skiing. "At that point I was pretty well and truly involved in the sport in 2006, I was maybe 12 and that was sort of when I realised that that's what I wanted to do," Graham explained. He noted that Begg-Smith provided significant mentorship during the late 2010s, guiding him through his debut at the Sochi Olympics.

Despite Begg-Smith's controversial background—born in Canada, he switched allegiance as a teen and later became a tech millionaire in online advertising—Graham maintains regular contact with him. Begg-Smith, reportedly residing in the Cayman Islands, continues to support Australian athletes, offering advice and encouragement.

Begg-Smith's Continued Passion and Influence

"It's really cool that he's still in contact a bit and still passionate about the sport," Graham said, highlighting Begg-Smith's often-overlooked contributions. "Sometimes I guess what he's done for our sport goes very unnoticed, but it's really cool the legacy he's sort of left." Graham shared that Begg-Smith has been actively involved recently, reviewing videos and providing feedback.

Begg-Smith's influence extends beyond Graham. At the Beijing Games, he messaged skier Woods, who finished sixth, to express that he was "robbed" of a medal. Woods, now 25, found this endorsement from the sport's "top dog" to be a massive confidence boost, fueling his belief in eventually reaching the Olympic podium.

Recent Triumphs and Ongoing Support

Following his success in Milan-Cortina, Woods received another message from Begg-Smith congratulating him and affirming his performance as the best of the day. This ongoing engagement underscores Begg-Smith's dedication to Australian skiing excellence.

Graham, who served as Australia's flagbearer in Italy, reiterated Begg-Smith's unwavering commitment: "He's still very passionate about this sport and always wants Australia to do well." This legacy of inspiration and support continues to drive the next generation of Australian Olympic skiers toward future achievements.
