Reece Walsh Sidelined with Facial Fracture, Broncos Coach Weighs Replacement Options
Brisbane Broncos superstar Reece Walsh is set to undergo surgery for a facial fracture, sidelining him for an estimated four to six weeks. The injury occurred during the Broncos' 26-12 victory over the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday night, where Walsh sustained a category one Head Injury Assessment (HIA) just before halftime and did not return to the field.
In his absence, winger Jesse Arthars shifted to the fullback position, showcasing his versatility and defensive prowess. Broncos coach Michael Maguire has identified Arthars and specialist fullback Hayze Perham as the two primary candidates to fill the void left by Walsh.
Injury Details and Team Concerns
Scans confirmed the fracture for Walsh, adding to the Broncos' injury woes. Captain Adam Reynolds exited the match after 25 minutes due to a groin strain, while his replacement, Ben Hunt, played through a stretched medial ligament. Both players are undergoing further scans to assess the severity of their injuries.
Arthars, who was making his first NRL appearance of the season after replacing the dropped Josiah Karapani, expressed confidence in his ability to step up. "I haven't played there too much, but I have done a lot of reps at fullback over the years and this year as well, just in case anything was to happen," Arthars said. "Unfortunately, Reece has got injured. If they want me to play No.1, I will be happy to do it."
Potential Replacements and Team Dynamics
Coach Maguire highlighted both Arthars and Perham as viable options in the post-match press conference. Perham, who has previous NRL experience with the Warriors, Parramatta, and Canterbury, missed last season due to an ACL rupture but has been excelling at fullback for the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup.
Arthars praised Perham's resilience and form, noting their shared time at the Magpies. "Hayze has been through a fair bit with an ACL last year, which was really tough for him," Arthars commented. "I have seen him come back from that because I am in the same feeder team as him. He has been going really well. If Hayze goes there to fullback, I have full faith in him."
Hunt also endorsed Arthars' capabilities, emphasizing his defensive skills and work ethic. "Jesse is an excellent defensive fullback and really good at organising our numbers," Hunt said. "He works really hard and is a ball runner out the back."
The Broncos now face a critical period as they navigate these injuries, with the team's depth and adaptability set to be tested in the coming weeks.
