Ex-NRL Star Wallace Unleashes Brutal Sledge Ahead of Boxing Showdown
Former NRL enforcer Jarrod Wallace has landed a stinging verbal blow on his rival Nelson Asofa-Solomona in the lead-up to their highly anticipated Easter Sunday boxing clash. The two ex-rugby league heavyweights are set to face off in Wollongong as part of the undercard for Tim Tszyu's WBO world title bout against undefeated Middleweight Denis Nurja, setting the stage for a fiery encounter.
Wallace Confident Despite Underdog Status
Despite entering his professional boxing debut as the underdog against Asofa-Solomona, Wallace expressed unwavering confidence in his ability to overcome the larger opponent. He backed up his bold claims with a cheeky dig at Asofa-Solomona's departure from the Melbourne Storm, highlighting perceived flaws in his game.
"He is big, he's powerful, I've got respect for him, but there are plenty of flaws," Wallace stated. "Craig Bellamy has seen it and that's why they sacked him." When pressed for a response, Asofa-Solomona simply smiled and offered a "no comment," adding to the pre-fight tension.
History Between the Fighters
This is not the first time Wallace and Asofa-Solomona have traded leather in the ring. They previously met in an exhibition bout in late 2023, where Asofa-Solomona secured a decisive victory. On that occasion, Wallace's corner threw in the towel after Asofa-Solomona put him on the canvas with a powerful uppercut and a glancing right hand, showcasing his knockout power.
Since exiting the Melbourne Storm at the end of last season, dual premiership winner Asofa-Solomona has transitioned to boxing full-time. He kicked off his new career impressively with a knockout win over former Dragons forward Jeremy Latimore, signaling his serious intent in the sport.
Fighters' Bold Predictions
Asofa-Solomona has promised a dominant performance, declaring, "It's going to be a demolition job. I really feel once he feels that 10 ounce glove he is going to get the shock of his life. I guarantee it's going to be a highlight reel finish."
Undeterred by his prior defeat, Wallace remains resolute, vowing to take his opponent into deep waters and positioning himself as the fan favourite. "I think everyone would love to see me go in and knock him out," Wallace said. "I'm going to get him in deep waters, get him in deep rounds and throw. We're just going to throw bombs at each other. That's what everyone wants to see and that's what heavyweights do."
Stacked Fight Card in Wollongong
The Easter Sunday event features a stacked card beyond the Wallace-Asofa-Solomona bout. Australian super bantamweight Sam Goodman will seek a win over Rodrigo Ruiz in an IBF World Title eliminator, while Tokyo Olympian Paulo Aokuso aims for his tenth professional victory against Kittipong Jian Hao Ho. This lineup promises an action-packed night of boxing for fans in Wollongong and beyond.
