Storm's Katoa out for 2026 after brain surgery

The Melbourne Storm have delivered a significant update on the health of forward Eli Katoa, confirming the seriously injured star will not play in the 2026 NRL season as he faces a lengthy and uncertain recovery period.

A Long Road to Recovery Begins

The club released an official statement on Tuesday, revealing that Katoa has safely returned to Melbourne after undergoing brain surgery in New Zealand. While he is now out of hospital, the statement emphasised that the 25-year-old has a "long road ahead" in his rehabilitation.

The devastating injury occurred earlier this month while Katoa was representing Tonga against New Zealand in the Pacific Cup. In a frightening sequence of events, the player sustained three separate head knocks within just 90 minutes of gameplay.

Emergency Response and Surgery

The situation escalated critically when Katoa experienced seizure activity on the sidelines, requiring immediate medical attention and oxygen. He was rushed to a hospital where surgeons performed an emergency procedure to address bleeding on his brain.

After his arrival back in Melbourne, Katoa was placed under the care of specialist medical professionals. In a positive development, he has since been discharged from hospital and will now continue his recovery journey from home.

Club Puts Health First

Storm Chief Executive Justin Rodski left no doubt about the club's priorities, stating, "Eli’s health and wellbeing remain our number one priority."

"It is great to have him home safely and under the care of our club doctor and local specialists," Rodski added. "He is improving each day and looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation from home."

In a clear message about the seriousness of the injury, Rodski confirmed there is currently no timeframe for Katoa's recovery or a potential return to training. The club has made the decisive call that he will not return to training during this pre-season and will be unavailable for the entire 2026 competition.

"He has a long road ahead in his recovery and his focus will be on returning to full health before considering any form of return to training," Rodski explained.

The CEO concluded with a message of support for the popular player, saying, "Eli is a much loved and respected member of our team and club. The Storm Family will rally around him and support him through his recovery."
