Former St George Illawarra Dragons star Trent Merrin has been granted more time to prepare his defence after facing court over allegations he stole a substantial sum of cryptocurrency.
Court Appearance and Charges
The 36-year-old ex-NRL forward appeared at Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. He is formally charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.
Dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, Merrin remained composed as his solicitor requested an adjournment. The legal team indicated they needed additional time to review the case details and continue negotiations regarding the agreed facts of the matter.
Details of the Alleged Offence
Police prosecutors allege that Merrin illegally accessed the online account of a 29-year-old man. It is claimed that during this access, he transferred cryptocurrency valued at $140,000 to an account under his own control.
The investigation led to Merrin's arrest on November 4, 2025, following the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Barrack Point, Shellharbour. During the police operation, several electronic devices were seized for forensic examination.
Bail Conditions Varied and Next Steps
Presiding Magistrate M Douglass agreed to vary Merrin's existing police bail conditions. The requirement for him to regularly report to authorities was formally removed.
The magistrate also granted leave for Merrin's next court appearance, meaning his physical presence will not be required if his legal representative is in attendance. The matter was adjourned and is scheduled to return to Port Kembla Local Court on December 10, 2025, where a plea is expected to be formally entered.
The case continues to develop as both the defence and prosecution work through the complex details often associated with financial and digital currency crimes.
