Bulldogs Bow Out of Tino Chase as Salary Cap Bites

Canterbury Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould has definitively shut down speculation linking the club with a blockbuster move for Gold Coast Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. The powerful prop, currently preparing for rugby league's Ashes series in the UK, is set to test the open market for the 2027 season, where he is anticipated to command a salary in the vicinity of $1.5 million per season.

Salary Cap Reality Checks Bulldogs' Ambitions

When questioned on social media about the potential of signing the marquee forward, Gould provided a blunt and final assessment of the situation. "Our roster and our salary cap are full, thanks," Gould tweeted. He added, "Looking forward to our players returning to work soon. It’s been quiet around here without them." This public declaration effectively removes the Bulldogs from the running, which also reportedly includes the Perth Bears and Melbourne Storm.

Titans Coach Confident of Retaining His Captain

Despite the swirling rumours, new Gold Coast Titans coach Josh Hannay has expressed strong confidence in his ability to retain the 25-year-old leader. Hannay, who shares a long-standing relationship with Fa'asuamaleaui from their time in Queensland representative teams, believes the key lies in fostering a successful and positive environment. "I’ve had some really honest discussions with Tino," Hannay stated. "One of the reasons I was so enthusiastic to come here and coach was to coach Tino, and he knows that. I know he has a passion for this club."

Fa'asuamaleaui himself has previously indicated a desire to stay with the Titans, emphasising that contract clauses are a "safety net" rather than a sign he wants to leave. "My heart is here at the Titans," Fa'asuamaleaui told AAP. "I came here to achieve something." He also voiced his support for the new coach, saying, "I’ve worked with Josh since I was a young kid... and he knows what he wants and how to achieve it." The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the Titans can match the financial offers from rival clubs and convince their captain that success is achievable on the Gold Coast.
