Broncos Seek to Overturn Paix Concussion Ruling After Injury Carnage
The Brisbane Broncos are set to challenge the Category 1 concussion ruling for hooker Cory Paix, following a devastating injury toll that struck the defending premiers in their recent match. Paix and replacement rake Blake Mozer, who failed a Category 2 Head Injury Assessment (HIA), were both forced out during the second half of the Broncos' 35-31 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys on Friday night.
This setback compounds an already dire situation for the Broncos, who entered the game without injured star trio Reece Walsh, Ben Hunt, and Adam Reynolds. The ruling on Paix in the 45th minute left coach Michael Maguire baffled, especially with a crucial clash against the Wests Tigers looming next Saturday.
Concussion Controversy and Injury Woes
Paix's Category 1 designation means he automatically misses the upcoming Tigers match and was barred from returning to the field against the Cowboys. Maguire expressed confusion over the decision, noting that Paix had passed his initial test and was ready to re-enter play. "I think Paixy will be fine for next week. He was ready to run back out. That is a call made externally so I will go through the right channels with the doctors and review that one," Maguire stated.
In a further blow, Mozer, making his first NRL appearance since 2024, potentially suffered a broken jaw while attempting to tackle Cowboys powerhouse Jason Taumalolo. Doctors were assessing Mozer post-match, with Maguire lamenting, "It's a real shame. He has worked really hard and I thought he was going really good out there. We were all excited for him."
Roster Challenges and Emerging Talent
With other hookers Hunt and Billy Walters also sidelined due to injuries, the Broncos may turn to 20-year-old Cameron Bukowski, a highly rated No. 9 on a development contract. Maguire indicated that Bukowski could be ready for an opportunity, saying, "Cam has been battling away, fighting and working hard in the background. An opportunity might be around the corner."
The match also saw lock and stand-in captain Pat Carrigan sin-binned and placed on report for a shoulder charge to the head of Cowboys centre Tom Chester. Both Carrigan and Maguire contested the call, with Carrigan asserting, "I honestly felt like he hit me square on in the chest," and Maguire adding, "It was chest. That's how I saw it. It is interesting, because I thought it was a really good chest tackle."
Bunker Decision Adds to Frustration
Maguire's frustrations extended to a bunker decision that denied the Broncos a try when it appeared Chester had dropped the ball. The bunker applied the disruptor rule, penalising Gehamat Shibasaki and preventing Brisbane from extending their lead to 10 points with 15 minutes remaining. "I've got to say, I've got no idea on that, it's bizarre," Maguire commented, calling for consistency in such rulings.
Despite the loss and the injury carnage, Maguire praised his team's resilience, noting they "really dug in for each other" amid challenging circumstances. The Broncos now face a critical period as they navigate these setbacks and prepare for their next fixture.
