A terrifying incident at a regional NSW speedway event has left nine people injured, including one man in critical condition, after a racing car crashed through a safety fence and into spectators.
Chaotic Scene at Walcha Showground
The dramatic crash occurred around 6:15pm on Saturday evening at the Walcha showground on Derby Street in the New England region of NSW. A speedway car competing in a race lost control following an on-track collision before plowing through protective barriers.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as the vehicle struck a mobile grandstand filled with spectators. Bystanders immediately rushed to assist the injured before emergency services could arrive at the remote location.
Multiple Casualties Rushed to Hospital
Paramedics treated nine injured people at the scene before transporting them to medical facilities. The victims included seven men and two women aged between 20 and 75 years old.
A 54-year-old man suffered critical injuries in the incident and was among four patients requiring transfer to major hospitals. Three other people sustained serious injuries, while the remaining five victims received treatment for less severe wounds.
All patients were initially taken to Walcha District Hospital, with the most critically injured requiring air ambulance helicopter transport for specialized care.
Investigation Underway
NSW Police have confirmed that the 27-year-old driver was involved in a track collision immediately before the car veered into the crowd. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The Walcha speedway event was part of regular motorsport activities held at the showground, which serves as a community hub for the small rural town located approximately 425 kilometres north of Sydney.
Motorsport Australia officials are expected to work with local police to determine what safety measures were in place and whether any factors contributed to the severity of the incident.
