Western Force's Super Rugby Pacific finals hopes in tatters after loss to Brumbies
Force's finals hopes fading after Brumbies defeat

The Western Force's Super Rugby Pacific finals aspirations are hanging by a thread after they suffered a 32-15 defeat at the hands of the Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra. The Brumbies ended their three-match losing streak with a commanding performance, piling on points in the latter stages to deny the Force a bonus point.

The visitors struggled to find their rhythm throughout the contest. The home side's aggressive blitz defence neutralised fly-half Ben Donaldson's influence, and while wingers Dylan Pietsch and Zac Lomax showed flashes of brilliance under the high ball, the Force's forward pack was outmatched by their Brumbies counterparts.

With only three fixtures left in the regular season, the Force currently occupy 10th position on the ladder, trailing the sixth-placed Queensland Reds by nine points. Their upcoming clash against the Reds at HBF Park next Saturday is now a must-win encounter.

Realistically, the Force would need to triumph in all three remaining matches—all at home against the Reds, Fijian Drua, and Waratahs—and rely on other results going their way to secure an unlikely top-six berth.

"We knew they were going to come out and be raring to go. We had to set the physicality and at times we matched them but they won the collisions, were able to play on top and then our discipline let them into their attacking zone. They're a really quality side and they punished us there," Force captain Jeremy Williams told Stan Sport after the match.

Early setbacks for the Force

The match got off to a disastrous start for the Force. Darcy Swain, playing his 100th game, fumbled the opening kick-off, and from the ensuing possession, Lachlan Shaw powered over to give the Brumbies a 7-0 lead in the second minute.

The Force's night took another turn for the worse when rising scrum-half Henry Robertson was forced off with a serious-looking knee injury. Despite the setback, the visitors opted for a tactical approach, using box kicks and high balls to put pressure on the Brumbies, who began making errors under the aerial assaults from Lomax and Pietsch.

Although the Brumbies' rapid defensive line speed stifled the Force's attacking efforts, some deft handling from Darcy Swain and Carlo Tizzano sparked a move that led to Harry Johnson-Holmes scoring a converted try from close range in the 16th minute, levelling the scores.

The Force then built some pressure, but a poorly executed line-out in the 22nd minute let the Brumbies off the hook. However, a penalty from Donaldson in the 30th minute gave the visitors a 10-7 lead.

The Brumbies responded almost immediately. Corey Toole broke through the defensive line, and after combination play from Ryan Lonergan and David Feliuai, Ollie Sapsford crossed for a try, handing the home side a 14-10 advantage at halftime.

Second-half dominance by the Brumbies

The second half began scrappily for the Force, and a Lonergan penalty extended the Brumbies' lead to 17-10. The scrum-half then combined with his brother Lachlan to score a try in the corner, pushing the buffer to 22-10.

Trailing by 12 points and with their season on the line, Pietsch produced an outstanding defensive effort to stem the Brumbies' momentum. The Force began to hold onto the ball, and their positive spell of possession culminated in a rolling maul try from Tizzano, cutting the margin to 22-15.

However, their resurgence was short-lived. A pass from Nathan Hastie was intercepted, and Lonergan's improvised cross-field kick allowed Hudson Creighton to kick a 50-22, flipping field position. Lonergan then slotted another penalty to push the lead back to 10 points.

Debutant Chris Mikelson sealed the victory for the Brumbies with a try on his first appearance, putting the result beyond the Force's reach.
