Wagga Racing Preview: Sunday's Top Picks and In-Depth Analysis

Form analyst Shayne O'Cass delivers his expert best bets and comprehensive race-by-race breakdown for the upcoming Sunday meet at Wagga, highlighting key contenders and trainer insights.

Gary Colvin's High Hopes for Pierata Star Debut

Country Championships-winning trainer Gary Colvin is optimistic about the potential of his newest stable addition, Pierata Star, a son of Group 1 star Pierata. Colvin hopes this debutant can emulate the success of his former boom stablemate Cambar, another Pierata offspring who won his first three starts, including a TAB Highway at Rosehill Gardens last November.

Colvin acquired Pierata Star for $25,000 at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, half the price of Cambar. Despite not having a formal trial, the horse has shown promise in a jumpout. "He's a nice horse on the way up," Colvin remarked. "It's not an overly strong race so I expect he will run some sort of race." Pierata Star will compete in the Kristopher Graydon Jeweller Maiden Plate over 1000 meters.

Tassy Fox Aims to Shed Maiden Status

Colvin also eyes success with Tassy Fox in the Lime Lead Catering Country Boosted Plate over 1400 meters. Despite six placings from 11 starts, she remains a maiden, most recently disappointing as a $1.35 favorite at Albury. "She has been a bit of a handful with this and that and she probably wants a mile," Colvin noted, acknowledging the challenge of finding suitable races in bush tracks.

With a wide draw, Colvin remains confident, relying on jockey skill to secure cover. Tassy Fox, purchased for just $2,000, has already earned $33,800, proving a shrewd investment. Her pedigree is notable, with third dam Whisked winning the Thousand Guineas and producing Tie The Knot.

Southern Dancer Steps Down in Class

Colvin's third runner, Southern Dancer, enters the Wagga RSL Ladies Day Benchmark 82 Handicap, a Heat of the Wagga Staying Series over 2000 meters. This race represents a class drop after contests in the SDRA Country Championships Qualifier and Albury Mile. "She's a pretty good mare, she is a deadset 2000 metre horse, so you'll see her really come good now," Colvin predicted, citing a tough previous run that should prime her for this event.
