Sheza Alibi Stuns with Dominant Doncaster Handicap Victory
Sheza Alibi has emphatically confirmed her status as Australian racing's brightest spark with a stunning annihilation of her rivals in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap. The three-year-old filly delivered a performance that left jockey Jamie Melham in awe, as she routed some of the nation's top milers in a display of sheer brilliance.
A Breathtaking Comeback on the Track
Carrying the weight of expectation as the $1.90 favourite, Sheza Alibi faced a daunting challenge when she found herself with barely any rivals behind her just 400 meters from the finish. However, in a remarkable turn of events, the daughter of Saxon Warrior surged forward, rounding up the entire field within 200 meters. She careered up the Randwick home straight, leaving top colt Autumn Boy trailing more than four lengths astern and looking utterly ordinary in her wake.
"Jesus Christ! I've never sat on a horse that has given me goosebumps like that before," exclaimed Melham after the race. "She had to do it today in that ground. We were back further than I wanted to be, we were wider than I wanted to be, all sorts. In the end, it didn't matter."
Jockey's Praise and Historical Significance
Melham further elaborated on the incredible feel Sheza Alibi provided during the race. "In two or three strides, I thought, 'we're going to win by half the length of the straight'. That was incredible," he said. "They know she's a good horse but what she did then, I've never sat on a horse that's given me a feel like that. And I've sat on plenty of decent horses in the past; she's a freak."
With this victory, Sheza Alibi made history by becoming the first filly to win the Doncaster Handicap this millennium, a feat last achieved by the legendary Sunline. She is now being touted as trainer Peter Moody's best horse since the iconic Black Caviar, with Melham affirming, "She's in that category, I think."
Other Group 1 Highlights from the Day
The afternoon's racing action also featured other notable Group 1 successes. Joliestar secured the fifth Group 1 win of her career with a half-length triumph in the T J Smith Stakes over 1200 meters. Meanwhile, Green Spaces demonstrated impressive staying prowess by booming to a three-length victory in the Australian Derby over 2400 meters.
Additionally, Campione D'Italia claimed the Sires' Stakes over 1400 meters, marking a second major win for the Chris Waller-James McDonald combination alongside their success with Joliestar.
Sheza Alibi's performance not only solidifies her position as a rising star in horse racing but also sets the stage for an exciting future, with fans and experts alike eagerly anticipating her next moves on the track.
