Nowra Racing Preview: Spiritualistic Leads Wet Track Charge on Sunday

Form analyst Adam Sherry delivers his comprehensive best bets and detailed race-by-race analysis for the Nowra race meeting scheduled for Sunday, April 5, 2026. The forecast suggests at least a soft track, potentially heavy, which could significantly influence outcomes across the card.

Spiritualistic Primed for Wet Conditions

Co-trainers Mitch Beer and George Carpenter express confidence in their four-year-old grey mare Spiritualistic, who thrives on rain-affected ground. With a notable victory on heavy terrain and a second-place finish on soft going from four wet track appearances, she appears ideally suited for the conditions. Drawing barrier 3 in the Benchmark 66 Handicap over 1400 metres, with jockey Jean Van Overmeire aboard, Spiritualistic is positioned as a strong contender to conclude the day successfully.

"She is a big, strong So You Think mare and she loves it wet," remarked Carpenter. "I thought her first-up run was really good actually. It was quite a strong race, probably one of the strongest she has contested, and I was really happy with her. She will improve as she steps out in trip. She has drawn really well and has good gate speed which is an advantage with Nowra being a tight track. She should settle in a nice spot and is one of our best chances for the day."

Spiritualistic showed keenness when resuming but maintained effort to finish fourth behind Not That Easy over 1300 metres at Kembla Grange, indicating room for enhancement with the increased distance.

Other Key Runners from the Stable

Three-year-old filly Perchance impressed Carpenter with a debut fourth behind Spanish Artist in a 1200-metre Super Maiden at Kembla Grange two weeks prior. Stepping up to 1400 metres in the Maiden Handicap, also with Van Overmeire riding, she is expected to benefit from the extended trip.

"I think she will get out to a mile as well and potentially a little bit further," he added. "Her trials were nice and her debut run was really good. She is a huge mare, probably nearly 18 hands high and will continue to grow and iron out her racing career and has a good future. She will go back from the gate and have the last crack at them. She will probably be peaking third or fourth-up."

Carpenter indicated uncertainty regarding Coco Dior's participation in the same race after drawing gate 14. "We will just have a look at the weather and the scratchings but she probably won't run," he explained. "She is one of our better horses and has a huge amount of ability but I probably still a preparation away. While she ran third on the heavy track at Kembla two starts ago, she wasn't entirely happy on it."

The stable will also monitor track conditions before deciding on the debut of two-year-old Ponzi Scheme in the Maiden Plate over 1100 metres. The son of Profiteer has demonstrated natural ability in barrier trials, including a half-length victory at Kembla Grange and a narrow second at Hawkesbury.

"He's very fast. He jumps out of the gates and puts himself there," Carpenter noted. "For a horse who hasn't raced yet, he has shown nice manners in his trials and conducts himself well. We will just monitor the track. If it's a Soft six or seven, he will run, if it's heavy, we will probably save him. He's got a heap of ability and is really nice horse. We are just trying to place him where he can win and get some prizemoney under his belt to get into some nice races. There's a $200,000 Inglis race coming up at Wagga in a few weeks."

Inside Mail – Nowra Race-by-Race Analysis

Race 1: The Easter Bunny Country Boosted Class 1 Handicap 1000m

WRITTEN BY LUCY (3) exhibited extreme bravery first-up at Canberra, trapped five-wide before closing to finish a length second behind all-the-way winner Into The Fire. A second-up winner last campaign, she is hard to beat from a nice gate. PLATINUM RIDGE (1) resumes from a lengthy lay-off, having been a first-up winner on a Soft 6 at the Sapphire Coast last May. BABY DAISY (6) took an inside run and finished strongly to win on a heavy track at Albury, but blundered badly at start when fourth at Canberra last start.

Bet: Written By Lucy to win

Race 2: Astute Brent Rollings Maiden Plate 1000m

DANCER'S DELIGHT (3) was very unlucky on debut, severely checked in the straight when sixth behind Pombia over 1000m at Canberra on March 25. Drawn nicely, she will give a bold sight. PONZI SCHEME (10) is a debutant by Profiteer who sat wide to win his Kembla trial and tracked the leader when just beaten by Mossrocket in his Hawkesbury heat. THE WAY AHEAD (6) settled fourth and battled to finish third in that same race at Canberra last start, having boxed on when runner-up behind Twoexcel at Newcastle previously, placed four from five at this trip.

Bet: Dancer's Delight each-way

Race 3: Affinity Construction Benchmark 58 Handicap 1100m

BRUTAL BELLE (10) was highly impressive first-up, tracking the leader before pushing out on straightening and racing away to a four-length win from Sneaky Pee Cee at Goulburn. Runner-up in two of three heavy track runs. CUBAN RAIN (6) was slow away and settled back before working home for second to the exciting Brave Xena over this track and distance, having been a month between runs when seventh to Kitty Okay at Kembla. STARINION (3) led all-the-way to beat The New Sinatra at Kembla but scrambled on jumping when ninth at Canberra.

Bet: Brutal Belle to win

Race 4: Solomon Motor Group Country Boosted Maiden Plate 1200m

STERN REMINDER (3) performed well on debut when third to Tiye in a Super Maiden at Coonamble last year, returning after almost a year off to finish runner-up to Iconic Rose at Wagga on Country Championships Qualifier Day. Will be better for the run with blinkers applied. SACRED INFERNO (9) got well back and made steady ground when seventh to Travelon Dory over 1000m at Canberra first-up, awkwardly placed on his home turn when eighth to Borjnord at Albury, but can bounce back. HELIGAN (7) has placed in two of his last three starts last preparation and will improve off his first-up third at Albury.

Bet: Stern Reminder to win

Race 5: Kel Campbell Fuel Haulage Benchmark 58 Handicap 1600m

STRAIGHT FIRE (1) settled midfield and just battled when fifth to Green Run at Dubbo last start, with a tongue tie now applied. Was placed at his previous two, including a three-quarter length third to Fire And Gemstone on a Soft 7 at the Sapphire Coast. THE STAR ALIGN (5) debuts for a new stable, having worked to the line OK from last when fifth to Cabbucio at Canberra last start. ANNOINT (3) has been solid with placings, a close second in both runs back from a spell, indicating a win is near.

Bet: Straight Fire to win

Race 6: Pelican Rocks Cafe Maiden Handicap 1400m

SIX KINGS (8) raced outside the leader when sixth to Long Legs in a Rosehill Super Maiden on debut and led when fifth to John Dory at Canterbury. Resumes here with a wide gate. PERCHANCE (12) was solid when fourth behind Spanish Artist on debut at Kembla and will take improvement from the run. BEAUTY BIRDIE (15) went back to last from the outside gate and took a rails run when fifth to Anyone here on debut, expected to be better for the experience.

Bet: Six Kings to win

Race 7: The Country Club St Georges Basin Benchmark 66 Handicap 1400m

SPIRITUALISTIC (14) raced a little keenly first-up when fourth behind Not That Easy at Kembla, but will be better for the run and stepping up to 1400m, having been a big winner over Ridgeback on a Heavy 9 at Kembla last campaign. ME ME (10) has had a couple of attempts at the Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifiers with a fourth to Matcha Latte at Hawkesbury and a seventh to Midnight Opal at Kembla, previously third to Zulfiqar at Canterbury in December, finding this easier. KIRKUK (3) is racing consistently in provincial grade with a third to Audenzia and second behind Cuban Cigar at his past two starts.

Bet: Spiritualistic each-way
