Nowra Racing Preview: Spiritualistic Primed for Wet Track Success

Form analyst Adam Sherry has delivered his comprehensive race-by-race analysis and best bets for the Nowra race meeting scheduled for Sunday, April 5, 2026. The forecast suggests at least a soft track, potentially heavy, which could significantly influence outcomes across the card.

Spiritualistic Shines in Wet Conditions

Co-trainers Mitch Beer and George Carpenter remain confident about their mare Spiritualistic despite the challenging track conditions expected at Nowra. The four-year-old grey has demonstrated a clear preference for rain-affected ground, securing a dominant victory on heavy terrain and finishing second on soft surfaces across four wet track appearances.

With ideal conditions anticipated and a favorable draw from barrier three, Spiritualistic appears well-positioned to conclude the day successfully in the Benchmark 66 Handicap over 1400 meters. Jockey Jean Van Overmeire will take the ride. Carpenter noted that while she raced somewhat keenly when resuming, she maintained strong finishing speed to place fourth behind Not That Easy over 1300 meters at Kembla Grange.

"She is a big, strong So You Think mare and she loves it wet," Carpenter emphasized. "I thought her first-up performance was genuinely good. It was quite a competitive race, possibly one of the toughest she has faced, and I was very pleased with her effort. She will improve as she steps up in distance. With a good draw and strong gate speed, which is advantageous on Nowra's tight circuit, she should settle nicely and represents one of our best chances for the day."

Promising Filly Perchance Steps Up

Three-year-old filly Perchance impressed Carpenter with her debut fourth-place finish behind Spanish Artist in a 1200-meter Super Maiden at her home track of Kembla Grange two weeks prior. She is expected to benefit from stepping up to 1400 meters in the Maiden Handicap, with Van Overmeire again aboard.

"I believe she will eventually handle a mile and potentially further distances," Carpenter explained. "Her trials were encouraging, and her debut run was solid. She is a large mare, standing nearly 18 hands high, and will continue to develop throughout her racing career, showing promising potential. She will likely settle back from the gate and make a late charge. She should peak around her third or fourth start."

Carpenter expressed uncertainty regarding Coco Dior's participation in the same race after drawing wide in gate 14. "We will assess the weather and scratchings, but she probably won't run," he stated. "She is one of our more talented horses with significant ability but is likely still a preparation away from her best. Although she placed third on a heavy track at Kembla two starts back, she wasn't entirely comfortable on that surface."

Debut Decision for Ponzi Scheme

Beer and Carpenter will closely monitor track conditions before deciding whether two-year-old colt Ponzi Scheme will make his race debut in the Maiden Plate over 1100 meters, where he would compete against older horses. The son of Profiteer has displayed considerable natural ability in two barrier trials, including a half-length victory from I'm A Beaut at Kembla and a narrow second to Mossrocket at Hawkesbury.

"He's very fast. He jumps out of the gates and positions himself well," Carpenter remarked. "For an unraced horse, he has shown excellent manners in his trials and conducts himself professionally. We will monitor the track; if it's a Soft six or seven, he will run, but if it's heavy, we will probably save him. He possesses considerable ability and is a very nice horse. We are aiming to place him where he can win and accumulate prizemoney to qualify for some lucrative races, such as the upcoming $200,000 Inglis race at Wagga in a few weeks."
