Dubbo Racing Preview: Expert Insights and Best Bets for Sunday's Country Championships Qualifier

Form analyst Shayne O'Cass delivers a comprehensive race-by-race breakdown and top selections for the Dubbo race meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026. This preview highlights key contenders, including Kranich in the highly anticipated WRA Country Championships Qualifier, offering punters valuable insights ahead of the action-packed day.

Kranich Poised for Success Despite Barrier Draw Challenge

Former Adelaide Premiership-winning jockey Chad Lever expresses confidence in Kranich's ability to triumph in the WRA Country Championships Qualifier over 1400 meters, provided the barrier draw does not hinder his chances. Lever, a Port Augusta native who apprenticed under Hall of Famer Leon Macdonald, has developed a productive partnership with the Mick Mulholland-trained bay gelding. Kranich is currently listed as the $4.40 TAB Fixed Odds equal favourite for the qualifier.

Lever's record aboard Kranich stands at four rides for one victory and three placings, including a narrow second-place finish in this year's Dubbo Cup Prelude. The jockey, now based in Hawkesbury, has been closely involved in the horse's preparation, noting three first-class efforts over distances that were slightly unsuitable. Lever concurs with market assessments that Kranich's build-up has been nearly flawless, with the barrier draw being the primary concern.

Kranich drew barrier 13 out of 14, but will move in at least one position following the scratching of Wasted Days. Lever commented, "There's a fair bit of a run to the first corner so it's not too bad, it's just going to be a matter of where we are going to get. There should be good speed so hopefully we can land midfield somewhere or thereabouts with a little bit of cover. He's pretty adaptable but it would have been nicer if we had drawn that little bit closer and make it that little bit easier."

Kranich's Journey and Potential for Big Rewards

Kranich began his racing career in Victoria under trainer Greg Eurell, known for handling 2011 Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker. The son of Hallowed Crown had a brief stint in the southern state, recording two thirds and a fourth in three starts before being sold for $7,000 at the 2024 Inglis Digital sale. Since then, Kranich has earned close to $150,000 for his new connections, including Mulholland, with a potential shot at the $1 million Country Championships Final at Randwick on April 4 if he secures a first or second place this weekend.

The gelding has already made two 800-kilometer round trips to Sydney, finishing a neck second in a TAB Highway at Randwick and winning a country feature at Rosehill on August 16, 2025. Lever added, "He should be spot-on now that he's had the three runs back so I am quite looking forward to Sunday. He always has a go and tries. If he gets the right amount of luck, he will be there for sure."

Additional Key Rides and Selections for the Day

Mulholland has also entrusted Lever with riding the lightly-raced Narmer in the Martin Collins Australia Maiden Showcase over 1400 meters. A son of US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Narmer is pressing for favouritism after two fourth-place finishes to start his career. Lever noted, "This is going to be his third run and you'd think that he will probably improve again and be a hundred per cent ready to go. Once again the barrier is not going to help us much because he does go forward in his races but hopefully, we can get the right run and give him his chance."

In the opening race, the Wellington Boot Prelude for two-year-olds over 1100 meters, Lever will partner with I'm A Beaut for astute Hawkesbury trainer Terry Croft. This filly, purchased for $12,000 at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale, has trialled keenly, placing in both heats, including one behind Wednesday's Warwick Farm winner Satono Glow. Lever said, "Both of his trials have looked pretty good on paper. I like the way he hit the line in the first trial and then in the second trial, he began a lot better and was right there on the speed and went down to the line pretty comfortable."
