Wil Holmes wins U23 time trial at Road Nationals

South Australia's rising cycling star Wil Holmes has kicked off the 2025 AusCycling Road National Championships in spectacular fashion, securing a commanding victory in the under-23 men's time trial.

Holmes Powers to Victory on Ballarat Course

The event, held on the challenging roads around the Victorian city of Ballarat, saw the 19-year-old from Adelaide dominate the field. Holmes completed the 28.6-kilometre individual time trial course in a blistering time of 36 minutes and 24.50 seconds. His performance was strong enough to hold off the challenge from Western Australia's Declan Trezise, who finished second, and Queensland's Brady Gilmore in third.

This victory marks a significant milestone in Holmes's young career, adding a national title to his palmares. The win is particularly sweet as it comes on the back of dedicated training and preparation for the season's opening major event.

Strategic Effort Secures the Win

Speaking after the race, Holmes revealed his strategy was to hold back slightly in the opening stages. "I probably went out a little conservative in the first half, but I knew the second half of the course had more climbing and technical sections where I could make a difference," he said. His tactical approach paid dividends, allowing him to finish strongly and build an unassailable lead.

The young rider also dedicated his win to his family and support network, acknowledging the sacrifices made to reach this level. His focus now swiftly turns to the upcoming road race, where he will aim to double his championship tally.

Looking Ahead to the Road Race

The under-23 men's road race is scheduled for Saturday, presenting another opportunity for Holmes to showcase his talents on the national stage. With confidence high from his time trial success, he will be among the favourites for the coveted green and gold jersey.

The Australian Road National Championships in Ballarat continue throughout the week, featuring elite, under-23, and junior competitions across time trial, road race, and criterium events. Holmes's victory sets an exciting tone for the championships, highlighting the depth of young talent coming through the Australian cycling ranks.
