New South Wales Police have launched a public appeal for information following a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a cyclist near Newcastle.
Tragic collision at Nords Wharf intersection
Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Awabakal Drive at Nords Wharf around 11am on Sunday. The call came after reports that a bicycle rider had been struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, paramedics treated a 42-year-old male cyclist who had sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to John Hunter Hospital for urgent medical care but, despite the best efforts of hospital staff, he tragically passed away on Monday morning.
Vehicle fled the scene
Police have alleged that the cyclist collided with a black Toyota FJ Cruiser. Shockingly, the driver of the vehicle did not stop at the scene and fled following the impact.
Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene to meticulously piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Specialist forensic officers are combing the area for evidence.
Urgent appeal to the public
Investigators are now urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly motorists who may have been travelling on the Pacific Highway around Nords Wharf on Sunday morning.
Police are specifically requesting dash cam footage from vehicles in the area between 10:30am and 11:30am. They believe such footage could be crucial in identifying the vehicle and understanding the sequence of events.
Anyone with information, no matter how small, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the online portal at nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. All information will be treated confidentially.
The death marks another tragic loss on NSW roads, with police reiterating the importance of road safety and the legal and moral obligation for drivers involved in collisions to stop and render assistance.
