Melbourne Stars' Sam Harper Crowned BBL Player of the Tournament
Sam Harper Voted BBL's Best as Scorchers Miss Out

In a surprising turn of events, Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper has been officially crowned the Big Bash League's Player of the Tournament for the 2025-26 season. The award, announced on Wednesday, saw Harper finish top of the leaderboard with 16 votes, narrowly edging out competitors Liam Scott and David Warner by a single vote.

Scorchers' Absence Notable Despite Dominant Season

Perth Scorchers, who finished at the top of the league table and secured a home Big Bash final, were conspicuously absent from the top five of the Player of the Tournament voting. The award is determined by the two standing umpires in each regular-season game, who vote for the best performer on the field.

Stars teammate Tom Curran and Sydney Sixers' Jack Edwards completed the top five leaderboard, highlighting the individual brilliance that stood out to the officials throughout the competition.

Harper's Remarkable Career Resurgence

Sam Harper's journey to this accolade is particularly noteworthy. Signed by the Melbourne Stars on a one-year contract in August after two underwhelming seasons where he managed just 180 runs at an average of 11.25, Harper seized his opportunity with both hands.

The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman delivered an outstanding campaign, amassing 371 runs to finish third on the overall run-scoring charts. His impressive average of over 60, combined with a blistering strike rate of 155, made him a constant threat to opposition bowlers. Additionally, Harper contributed 13 dismissals behind the stumps, showcasing his all-round value to the Stars.

Scorchers' Statistical Standouts Overlooked

Perth Scorchers' omission from the voting leaderboard is puzzling given the performances of key players. Opener Finn Allen finished the regular season as the second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 26 more runs than Harper at an even higher strike rate of 186.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Aaron Hardie also had a strong campaign, scoring 317 runs at an average exceeding 40 and claiming 10 wickets with the ball. Despite these contributions, neither player received sufficient recognition from the umpires to feature in the top five.

Harper Reflects on His Improved Consistency

In comments made last week, Harper attributed his success to dedicated offseason work and a refined approach to his T20 game. "I certainly invested a lot of time in the winter into my T20 game," Harper explained. "There's also been a lot of moments throughout the past five to 10 years in BBL when I have done well and it's just not been consistent enough."

He emphasised the importance of maintaining performance levels throughout the season, stating, "So a few learnings from that, and then just trying to make it a consistent game in, game out and not just two or three games a season. I've probably been a little bit less funky and keeping it pretty simple and really just trying to hit good shots."

The Big Bash League will continue to unveil postseason honours, with the Team of the Tournament, as selected by the eight coaches in the competition, set to be announced tomorrow.
