Door Opens for Ashes Bolter After Abbott Injury
The race for a spot in Australia's Test squad has intensified, with Queensland paceman Xavier Bartlett publicly endorsing his veteran teammate, Michael Neser, for a call-up. This comes after a compelling display of bowling from the pair on the second day of the Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia at the WACA on Wednesday.
The opportunity arose following the news that New South Wales quick Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the first Test against England with a hamstring injury. With a backup bowling spot now vacant, selectors are looking for a reliable option, and the Queensland duo, already present in Perth, present a compelling and logistically simple solution.
Neser and Bartlett Impress on Tame WACA Pitch
Both Neser and Bartlett bowled with immense control on a wicket that offered little assistance to the bowlers. Their miserly spells were instrumental in triggering a Western Australia collapse, slipping from a comfortable 2-179 to a precarious 5-210.
While Bartlett found consistent swing, Neser proved particularly dangerous with the new ball, seaming it effectively. The experienced campaigner finished the day with figures of 1-37, including the wicket of Hilton Cartwright, while Bartlett remained unlucky to end with 0-45 despite an imposing performance.
"It’s good to be back with the red ball," Bartlett commented after the day's play. "Had a little bit of time with the white-ball squad, which was amazing, and to get out here in the grind of Sheffield Shield cricket is something that I really look forward to."
Bartlett's Glowing Endorsement for Test Veteran
Despite his own strong showing, Bartlett was quick to shift the spotlight onto his teammate's credentials for higher honours. He gave a glowing endorsement of Neser, highlighting his experience and proven ability at the international level.
"He’s an amazing bowler and an integral part of our team," Bartlett stated. "Seeing him up and running and bowling really well is good for Queensland and obviously Australia as well. He’s done it before at Test level, so if he gets that opportunity, I’m sure he’ll take it with both hands."
Bartlett's own performance was notable for its consistency, maintaining immaculate lengths and impressive speed even deep into the final session. The 26-year-old now faces a crucial task on day three, lining up against the formidable Cam Green, who remains unbeaten and is almost certain to feature in the Ashes Test at Optus Stadium.
"He’s so big, covers so much ground, he’s got all the shots, and he’s an amazing batter," Bartlett said of Green. "If we can put the ball in the right area, hopefully he nicks one and doesn’t get too many."
