Perth Wildcats Grapple with Injury Setbacks Ahead of NBL Postseason Opener
The Perth Wildcats are facing mounting injury concerns as they head into the NBL postseason, with key players Dylan Windler and David Okwera battling significant foot issues. The team's seeding qualifier against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Wednesday looms large, and the availability of these two athletes could be crucial to their playoff aspirations.
Windler's Foot Injury Revealed After Painful Regular Season Finish
Import Dylan Windler has disclosed that he played through the final rounds of the regular season with a torn plantar fascia, an injury sustained during back-to-back games against the Phoenix and Illawarra in late January. This condition caused him considerable pain, leading to a drastic reduction in his game time. In the last two matches, Windler logged only 18 minutes on court against Adelaide and failed to score, highlighting the severity of his discomfort.
"I've been pretty banged up for the last month. I had a little tear in my plantar fascia and I was dealing with that foot pain," Windler admitted. "I was able to get a little bit of a shot over the break and a little bit of rest with that combined has helped me out and I've been able to ramp up over these last few days and I'm feeling good again now."
He added that the recent time off has been beneficial, allowing him to work with medical staff to find a solution. Windler's recovery is particularly vital given his impressive performance against South East Melbourne during the regular season, where he averaged 19 points and nine rebounds per game.
Okwera's Similar Struggles Cast Doubt on Playoff Availability
Meanwhile, David Okwera is also contending with the same plantar fascia injury, putting his participation in Wednesday's qualifier in serious jeopardy. Okwera has been sidelined, focusing on rehabilitation work as he attempts to recover in time for the crucial matchup.
"He's navigating that as well," Windler said of his teammate. "He's just trying to stay in high spirits, do his rehab and do what he can to get back on the court." The Wildcats will closely monitor his progress in the coming days, as his absence could weaken their defensive and rebounding capabilities.
Team Adjustments Amid Coach Rillie's Absence
Adding to the challenges, head coach John Rillie has been overseas, coaching Australia in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Guam and the Philippines. In his absence, assistant coaches have taken charge of preparations, with Keegan Crawford stepping into Rillie's role during training sessions.
Windler praised the team's maturity and adaptability during this period. "Keegan has been a great voice for us and the head coach presence in this time period while JR has been away," he noted. "The guys have rallied behind that. Obviously we want to win this game so whoever is coaching us right now is focused on getting this group ready to go."
The Wildcats are set to travel to Victoria on Tuesday to reunite with Rillie, hoping to integrate his leadership seamlessly as they gear up for the high-stakes qualifier. With injury concerns clouding their roster, the team's depth and resilience will be tested in their pursuit of postseason success.
