Perth Wildcats Star Kristian Doolittle Earns Dual NBL Award Nominations
Perth Wildcats standout Kristian Doolittle has been recognised for an exceptional season, securing a place on the shortlist for both the National Basketball League's Most Valuable Player award and the Defensive Player of the Year honour. This dual nomination highlights his significant impact on the court as the Wildcats approach the conclusion of their regular season campaign.
Historic Defensive Pursuit for Doolittle
Doolittle is poised to potentially become the first Perth Wildcats player to claim the NBL Defensive Player of the Year award since Damian Martin, the legendary defender after whom the trophy is now named. Martin secured the defensive prize six times during the previous decade, with the award being renamed in his honour in 2020. No other Wildcats athlete has ever captured this prestigious defensive accolade.
The 28-year-old forward has demonstrated remarkable versatility throughout the season, effectively guarding both smaller and taller opponents with equal proficiency. His lockdown defensive efforts against some of the league's premier players have positioned him as a frontrunner for the Damian Martin Trophy, where he is expected to compete closely with South East Melbourne import John Brown III.
Impressive Statistical Performance
With just one game remaining in Perth's regular season schedule, Doolittle leads his team across all three major statistical categories. He is currently averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, showcasing his well-rounded contribution to the Wildcats' success.
While the MVP race is widely anticipated to be a contest between former Wildcat Bryce Cotton and Sydney Kings star Kendric Davis, who headline an eleven-player shortlist for the Andrew Gaze Trophy, Doolittle's inclusion among the finalists underscores his valuable presence in the league.
Coach's Praise for Defensive Versatility
Wildcats coach John Rillie recently praised Doolittle's unique defensive capabilities, emphasising his ability to guard any position on the court. "If you were to just line up and play one on one, he can defend every player in the league. Tell me one other player that has that ability," Rillie stated earlier this month.
"So as far as versatility and wanting the challenge, if anyone thinks someone else can defend one through five with the ability that he does, please let me know," the coach added, highlighting Doolittle's exceptional defensive range and competitive spirit.
Ben Henshall Recognised in Next Generation Category
In addition to Doolittle's nominations, Wildcats guard Ben Henshall has earned a spot on the five-player shortlist for the Next Generation Award. Henshall stepped up significantly this season, filling the point guard role during periods affected by injuries.
Returning for his third year with the Wildcats after missing out on an NBA opportunity, Henshall is averaging 9.1 points, 2.9 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game, demonstrating his development and contribution to the team's backcourt.
